Choose sunscreen for protection, not for moisture
Choose a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum, water resistant and SPF 30 or higher. Broad spectrum means protection against UVA and UVB rays; SPF mainly measures protection against UVB. Apply it before going out and reapply every two hours. Use enough to provide the protection stated on the label, rather than relying on a barely visible swipe. A sunscreen left closed in a cabinet is excellent shelf decor, but it protects no face from the sun.3
Choose a product made for the face. If your skin is dry or sensitive, look for fragrance free on the label. Unscented is not the same thing: it can still contain chemicals that hide or neutralize odors. A fragrance free label is a useful starting point when your skin is sensitive, not a reason to ignore irritation if it occurs.14
Treat sunscreen and moisturizer as separate jobs. A facial gel or lotion is generally a good fit unless your skin is very dry. For extra moisture, use a cream or ointment; dry skin guidance favors those over lotion. Ingredients to look for in a separate moisturizer include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, mineral oil and petrolatum. SPF describes sun protection, not hydration, so the front label has not applied for a second job.15
Cold, dry air can make dry skin harder to manage. A richer moisturizer can create a thicker barrier, but sunscreen still belongs in the routine throughout the year. Choose a moisturizer texture that you can use comfortably and often enough; dry skin care depends on regular use, not an impressive product name.6
How to use moisturizer and sunscreen together
- 1After washing your face, pat it gently and apply moisturizer promptly while the skin is still damp. Aim to do this within five minutes of washing.
- 2If your face is very dry, use a cream or ointment as your moisturizer. If a lighter facial moisturizer suits you better, a gel or lotion is a reasonable choice.
- 3Apply sunscreen before going out in a full, even layer that is thick enough to provide the protection on its label.
- 4Reapply sunscreen every two hours. Apply moisturizer again after washing or whenever your skin feels dry.
Sunscreen is the sun protection step, not a treatment for dryness. For dry skin, moisturizer does the moisture work: apply it several times a day as needed, including after washing and while skin is damp. A sunscreen moisturizer can simplify the morning routine, but continue using a separate moisturizer if your skin still feels dry.25
If sunscreen, moisturizer or another product causes burning, stinging or irritation, tell a dermatologist. Get advice if dry skin continues despite home care; excessively dry skin can need a treatment plan tailored to its cause and your skin.17
Is moisturizing sunscreen enough for dry skin?
A moisturizer with SPF can cover both steps if it offers broad spectrum, water resistant SPF 30 or higher. It is enough as your moisturizer only if it also leaves your dry skin comfortable. If your face still feels tight or flaky, add a separate cream or ointment. An SPF moisturizer can save a step, but a separate cream is still a sensible second tool when dryness persists; combination packaging is not a promotion to miracle worker.15
Can I apply moisturizer under sunscreen?
Yes. As a general routine, apply moisturizer after washing your face, then apply sunscreen before going out. Keep sunscreen as its own sun protection step and use enough to provide the protection on its label.34
Which sunscreen feels hydrating without leaving a greasy finish?
For a lighter facial texture, try a gel or lotion moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher. If your skin is very dry, use a richer cream separately rather than expecting a lighter sunscreen moisturizer to provide all the moisture you need. Texture is a personal preference, so choose a face formula you can apply generously and reapply as directed.56
