How long does healing usually take?
Chemical peels come in superficial, medium and deep versions, so 'a peel' is doing rather a lot of work on a treatment menu. Recovery depends on how deeply the treatment affects your skin. These are typical healing windows, not automatic permission to restart your acid toner.34
| Peel depth | Typical healing time | What recovery can involve |
|---|---|---|
| Superficial or refreshing | 1 to 7 days | Redness, followed by possible scaling that lasts 3 to 7 days. |
| Medium | 7 to 14 days | Redness, swelling, possible blisters, crusting and peeling. |
| Deep | 14 to 21 days | Bandages, wound care and several follow up visits. |
Home peels are generally superficial and gentler than office treatments, but their strength still matters. Higher strengths, more ingredients, extra passes and greater pressure during application can make a peel more aggressive. Retinol, tretinoin or adapalene used beforehand can also make the peel penetrate more deeply. Your previous recovery time is therefore not a reliable schedule for every future peel.46
How to decide whether to restart
- 1Check your aftercare instructions first. If the clinic gave you a specific plan for acids or prescription skincare, use that plan rather than a general healing estimate.
- 2Wait until the shedding has finished. Desquamation means skin shedding; exfoliating agents such as glycolic acid and retinoids should stay paused until that process is complete.
- 3Check for ongoing problems before applying an acid. Burning, itching or swelling calls for contact with your dermatologist, not another exfoliation session.
- 4If your restart instructions are unclear, ask the treating clinician when to resume your exact product and how often to use it. Glycolic acid can be part of longer term maintenance when advised, but there is no universal restart frequency.
What should I use while acids are paused?
Gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen make up the basic recovery routine, even if three products look suspiciously unambitious to the skincare industry. A peel disrupts the skin barrier, the protective outer layer, and moisturizing helps support healing. Avoid sun exposure and use broad spectrum sunscreen as directed. Do not pick flakes, pull off peeling skin, rub or scrub the treated area.16
Medium and deep peels need more than a standard skincare routine. Follow the prescribed soaks, ointments, dressings and any antiviral medication, and attend follow up visits. Keep skin moisturized as directed: skin that dries and cracks can scar. After a deep peel, total sun avoidance can be required for 3 to 6 months.5
Who needs a more cautious restart?
Sensitive skin, eczema and dry skin are risk factors for peel complications. Darker skin and a history of pigmentation changes also deserve particular care because inflammation can leave changes in skin color. Pregnancy and birth control pills can increase the risk of abnormal pigmentation after a peel. None of these situations creates a separate, fixed restart date; the priority is healing and an appropriate aftercare plan.126
When should I contact the clinic?
Report excessive redness, swelling, burning, pain, oozing, pus or blisters promptly. Persistent redness can be an early warning sign of scarring. Although some redness, swelling and blistering can occur during deeper peel recovery, your clinician should assess concerning symptoms rather than having you decide whether another acid will help.15
