The depth of your peel changes the wait
Peel strengths differ greatly, and deeper treatments need longer recovery. TCA, or trichloroacetic acid, is commonly used for medium peels, but its concentration and the depth of treatment matter. Ask the clinic which depth you had rather than guessing from the acid name.3
| Peel depth | Typical healing window | What recovery can involve |
|---|---|---|
| Light or superficial | 1 to 7 days | Redness followed by scaling. |
| Medium | 7 to 14 days | Redness, swelling, blisters, crusting and peeling. |
| Deep | 14 to 21 days | A bandaged treatment area and prescribed wound care. |
A superficial peel is sometimes called a "lunchtime" peel, which is a meal doing an unusual amount of marketing work. At home peels tend to be gentler than office treatments because their ingredient concentrations are lower. Still, aftercare depends on the strength of the peel and your skin's response, not where you applied it.4
How to decide whether to restart
- 1Check your aftercare instructions first. If they do not give a tretinoin restart plan, ask the treating clinician before applying it.
- 2Check the treated skin. Ongoing peeling, crusting, broken blisters or an area still needing wound care are reasons to keep following the recovery plan rather than restart on a calendar date.
- 3Confirm the evening routine. Tretinoin can be part of longer term care after a peel when advised, but ask which night to restart and how often to use your prescription.
Redness alone is not a reliable countdown: mild redness can persist for several weeks after a medium peel. Let your clinician assess persistent redness rather than treating the end of visible peeling as permission to resume tretinoin.1
What to use while tretinoin is paused
For routine care after a light or at home peel, use a gentle cleanser and a gentle moisturizer to keep the skin moist while its protective barrier recovers. Chemical peels disrupt that barrier, so the immediate job is helping the skin heal, not adding another exfoliating treatment.4
Medium and deep peels need more specific care, including prescribed soaks, ointment or dressings. Follow that plan instead of substituting your usual routine. Avoid sun exposure during healing, and use daily sunscreen after the skin heals. Deep peels require sun avoidance for 3 to 6 months.25
Using tretinoin before a peel is a separate decision
Some clinicians prescribe tretinoin before a peel to prepare the skin and help the peel penetrate more evenly. Other preparation plans pause retinoids for 1 to 2 weeks beforehand unless the physician directs otherwise. Neither plan tells you when to restart afterward. Tell the clinician about your tretinoin use, particularly before another peel.35
Chemical peeling has a preparation phase, a recovery phase and a maintenance phase, so the appointment is not the entire job description.1
When to contact your dermatologist
Contact your dermatologist if treated skin burns, itches or swells. Do not pick scabs, rub or scratch the area: those actions can cause infection or scarring. Report problems promptly rather than testing tretinoin on skin that is still troubling you.12
