Do you have to drink much before it happens?
No. With rosacea, even a small amount of alcohol or a short exposure to a trigger can cause noticeable flushing. Rosacea is a skin condition that can cause recurring facial redness, visible blood vessels and spots. Blood vessels in the face widen more easily in response to triggers, including alcohol. You do not have to wait until the next morning to notice a change.23
Why does alcohol make your face warm and red?
Flushing happens when blood vessels in the skin widen. The warmth and color can affect your face, neck and upper chest. There is more than one possible trigger within a drink: tyramine or histamine in fermented drinks such as beer, sherry and wine can also cause flushing. That helps explain why the type of drink matters for some people, not just the amount.14
Alcohol intolerance is different from a rosacea flare
The alcohol flush reaction is a type of intolerance, not an alcohol allergy. Your body converts alcohol into acetaldehyde, a toxic substance, then uses enzymes to break it down further. Inherited differences in those enzymes can let acetaldehyde build up and trigger flushing. These differences are more common in people of East Asian ancestry, but people of other backgrounds can have them too.5
The reaction can also include hives, nausea, low blood pressure, worsening asthma or migraine. People who have the alcohol flush reaction and continue drinking have a higher risk of certain cancers. Do not use antihistamines to hide the flush so you can keep drinking: they do not stop acetaldehyde's damaging effects.5
Does changing drinks help?
For rosacea, red wine can be a stronger trigger than other drinks, but some people react more to spirits. Changing the drink does not remove the alcohol, even if the bottle has a more impressive biography. Avoiding alcohol is the clearest way to avoid an alcohol trigger. If impaired alcohol metabolism causes your flush, switching from wine to beer does not address the underlying problem.156
What should you do when flushing starts?
- 1Stop drinking alcohol rather than trying to cover up the reaction.
- 2Drink water and keep cool. Remove a layer of clothing if you feel hot.
- 3Keep a record of the drink and what happens afterwards, rather than letting the wine label write the explanation.
- 4Avoid alcohol if it repeatedly causes flushing. If you have rosacea, use your record to identify and avoid your particular triggers.
What skincare helps if you have rosacea?
Use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen as part of your rosacea treatment plan. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day. A fragrance free sunscreen containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both is least likely to irritate sensitive skin. Trigger avoidance and gentle skincare work alongside prescribed treatment; they are not substitutes for treating persistent symptoms.67
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if flushing affects everyday life or you think a medical condition or medicine is causing it. A face that stays red, visible small vessels or spots can point to rosacea, which a dermatologist diagnoses by examining your skin and eyes and asking about symptoms. Some medicines also cause flushing when combined with alcohol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about interactions, and do not stop prescribed medicine on your own.34567
