Your late workout routine, in order

  1. 1Before exercise, remove makeup. An oil free makeup remover towelette is an option; you do not need a separate face wash just to prepare for the workout. Put on clean workout clothes.
  2. 2During exercise, gently pat sweat away with a clean towel rather than rubbing. Wipe shared equipment before using it so you do not transfer oil and bacteria from the equipment to your face.
  3. 3After exercise, wash promptly with a gentle cleanser that does not contain alcohol. For skin prone to acne, choose a mild, oil free cleanser. Showering also lets you rinse sweat from your body.
  4. 4Use lukewarm water and apply cleanser with your fingertips. Rinse gently, then pat dry with a soft towel. Skip scrubbing, washcloths and mesh sponges.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy. If you use topical acne medication, save application until after the workout rather than putting it on beforehand.

Washing your face in the shower counts as your evening cleanse, so the bathroom sink does not need an encore.2

What if I already washed before exercising?

Wash again after heavy sweating. The usual pattern is morning and evening cleansing, with an additional wash after sweating when needed. For oily skin or skin prone to acne, vigorous exercise can justify a third wash. For future late workouts, move the evening cleanse to after exercise rather than making an extra wash your default.12

If your skin is dry or sensitive, try water alone in the morning and cleanser at night. Excessive washing removes natural oils and can leave skin drier. If cleansing leaves your skin dry or irritated, switch to a gentler cleanser or use a thicker moisturizer rather than washing more aggressively.2

Without makeup to remove, you do not need to double cleanse, even if the routine feels underemployed with only one cleanser. If you still have makeup on, a cleansing balm, oil based cleanser or micellar water followed by a gentle cleanser is an option.2

What if I cannot shower straight away?

If you have a sink, wash your face there rather than waiting for a shower. Change out of sweaty workout clothes. For areas that tend to break out, pads containing salicylic acid are an option when showering is not possible. Cleansing wipes can also help when you have no sink or face wash, but keep them as a fallback rather than your main cleansing method: preservatives and repeated rubbing can irritate skin.123

What if I keep getting breakouts?

Prompt cleansing helps manage workout related buildup, but acne also involves factors such as hormones and genetics; washing harder does not scrub away the plugs inside pores. Continue your acne treatment. If you have a prescribed medicated cleanser, use it for your wash after exercise.34

Speak to a doctor if breakouts are not improving with treatment, or if spots are deep, painful or causing scars. Hot, swollen, red skin also needs medical advice; redness can be harder to see on brown or black skin. Acne that affects your mental health is another reason to seek help.5
