BHA means beta hydroxy acid, and salicylic acid is the most common example in skincare. It dissolves in oil and helps remove dead skin and sebum, the oily substance that can contribute to blocked pores. That makes salicylic acid useful for blackheads and whiteheads. Exfoliation is not necessary for everyone, despite its rather impressive public relations.345

Where does BHA go in the routine?

  1. 1Cleanse gently. If your BHA is a cleanser, use it here and rinse as directed rather than adding a second cleansing step.
  2. 2Apply your BHA treatment if it is a separate toner, liquid or serum. Follow the label's instructions for skin preparation, amount and whether to rinse.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer after exfoliating to help keep skin hydrated.
  4. 4Finish a morning routine with broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher. Use sunscreen every day, including days when you skip BHA.

This is general layering guidance: thinner products usually go before thicker creams. A BHA cream or another unusual format needs its own label instructions rather than the order for a liquid treatment. A separate toner is optional, so the routine does not need a supporting cast.14

Should you use BHA every day?

Daily use is possible with some salicylic acid products, but it is not a starting rule for every exfoliant. Frequency depends on the formula, your skin and the method of exfoliation. Start less often than the full permitted frequency, then increase gradually if your skin tolerates it. Never exceed the label's directions. Stronger exfoliation generally needs to happen less often.2457

For a salicylic acid cleanser that dries or irritates your skin, try a mild cleanser in the morning and the salicylic acid cleanser before bed. That is a cleanser specific option, not a reason to apply every BHA treatment nightly.7

What if you already use retinol or acne medication?

Check the existing routine before adding BHA. Retinol, prescription retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can already cause sensitivity or peeling, and extra exfoliation can worsen dryness. Do not combine salicylic acid with other medicated treatments on the same area unless your doctor directs you to. Avoid abrasive cleansers, alcohol containing preparations and other products designed to peel or exfoliate that area.45

How long does BHA take to work?

Salicylic acid used for acne can take several weeks or longer to deliver its full benefit. Acne can initially worsen, but irritation is a separate reason to reduce use, not something to push through. Many people need more than salicylic acid to control acne. See a doctor if self treatment is not helping, or spots are deep, painful or causing scars.267

When should you skip BHA?

Skip exfoliation on sunburned skin, open wounds or skin that is already irritated. Dry or sensitive skin needs a mild approach. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you have a darker skin tone or develop dark marks after irritation. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss salicylic acid with your doctor before using it.45

Stop using the product and seek medical advice for moderate or severe irritation, unusually warm skin or persistent stinging. Stop and get urgent medical help for throat tightness, trouble breathing, faintness or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.24
