Use the full product name and country when shopping, because CeraVe's cleanser names have apparently declined the offer of a simpler filing system. Keep each formula's details attached to that exact product rather than treating every salicylic acid cleanser as interchangeable.4

Which one fits what you want?

For rough texture, look at Renewing SA Cleanser in the US or SA Smoothing Cleanser in the UK. Renewing SA is a gel cleanser that CeraVe positions for normal skin, including rough and bumpy skin. CeraVe also lists gel cleansers as options for normal, oily and combination skin. The UK SA Smoothing Cleanser is designed to exfoliate while helping keep skin hydrated and supporting its protective barrier.125

For blemish prone skin, the UK Blemish Control Cleanser is the targeted option with a stated 2% salicylic acid concentration. In Colombia, Limpiador Control Imperfecciones also lists salicylic acid at 2% as its active ingredient. Choose by the product's purpose and your skin type, not by the percentage alone.345

What does the salicylic acid do?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, an exfoliating ingredient that loosens dead skin cells and helps prevent clogged pores. That makes an SA cleanser more than a wash for removing surface dirt: exfoliation is part of the job. Choose a nonabrasive exfoliator rather than adding harsh scrubs or cleansing tools, which can further irritate skin.2

How do you check the bottle?

Check the ingredient list on the actual packaging for salicylic acid; on Colombian packaging, look for "ácido salicílico". Also check that you are buying a cleanser: CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream is a separate moisturizing product, not the SA Smoothing Cleanser.24

Where does it fit in your routine?

Follow your cleanser's own directions for frequency. General cleansing guidance is to wash in the morning and at night, and after heavy sweating; that is not a specific twice daily schedule for every SA formula. After cleansing, use moisturizer and morning sunscreen. CeraVe's UK Blemish Control routine pairs cleansing with an SPF50 facial moisturizer in the morning and a facial moisturizer in the evening.35

If your skin is dry or sensitive, do not choose an exfoliating cleanser just because it contains salicylic acid. A cleanser that suits oily skin can be too harsh for dry, sensitive skin, and an overly harsh wash can leave skin dry, stripped and uncomfortable.1
