Why is slugging different from moisturizing?

Slugging means leaving petroleum jelly on your skin overnight. Its protective layer limits water loss, which is a more useful job than making your evening routine look fashionable. That same barrier can trap irritating skincare ingredients underneath.1

Moisturizer still belongs in a routine for oily skin: apply it after cleansing to keep skin hydrated. Choose products labeled oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Applying moisturizer after cleansing is ordinary skincare, even without a trend name. Salicylic acid can help reduce oiliness, but a harsh routine is not the answer: strong face washes and scrubbing can irritate skin, and an overly harsh cleanser can trigger increased oil production. Use a gentle face wash rather than trying to dry your skin out.3

What if salicylic acid leaves my skin dry?

Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliator, which helps remove excess dead skin cells. Follow your product's directions for the amount and frequency; applying extra or using it more often can leave skin raw and irritated. Chemical exfoliators can cause dryness even when used as directed. Apply moisturizer afterwards rather than adding more exfoliation. If your skin becomes too dry or irritated, stop the exfoliator for a few days. These are general exfoliator precautions, not a reason to copy another product's schedule. The directions on your own product should determine how often you use salicylic acid.2

How to slug on a separate night

  1. 1Cleanse and moisturize. Leave out salicylic acid, other exfoliating acids and retinoids.
  2. 2Apply a tiny amount of plain petroleum jelly. You can limit it to dry areas rather than covering your whole face.
  3. 3Allow about 30 minutes before bed so the products can settle.
  4. 4Leave it on overnight, then wash your face in the morning with a gentle cleanser.

Who should skip slugging?

Skip slugging if your skin is oily or prone to acne, because it can worsen breakouts. Do not slug infected skin or open wounds. Slugging is better suited to dry, dehydrated skin, particularly during dry winter weather.1

There is no fixed slugging schedule; a couple of nights can help with dryness, but it rarely needs to be nightly. See a dermatologist if slugging leaves skin red or irritated, or if blackheads or acne remain difficult to manage.13
