What else is happening around your eyes?

The useful distinction is whether the puffiness disappears after waking or comes with other symptoms. Morning puffiness can be ordinary fluid retention, which is a less glamorous explanation than the eye cream aisle would prefer. Too much or too little sleep can make facial swelling more noticeable.2

  • Itchy, watery, red eyes suggest an allergy. Allergic conjunctivitis, inflammation of the tissue covering the white of the eye and lining the eyelids, often causes puffy eyelids in the morning. Dust mites, pollen, mold and pet dander are common triggers.
  • Crusts around the eyelashes, gritty eyes or lids stuck together on waking can occur with blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelid rims. Symptoms often come and go. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms are present, and seek treatment.
  • A distinct lump rather than diffuse puffiness can be a stye or a blocked eyelid gland called a chalazion. A hot, painful, swollen eyelid needs urgent assessment rather than treatment as ordinary morning puffiness.

Some morning eye gunk is normal cleaning debris, even if the name sounds like something no skincare department would approve. It collects overnight because you are not blinking it away. Discharge that is unusually abundant, sticky, yellow or green needs an eye care assessment, especially alongside swelling or redness. Its appearance alone cannot tell you which treatment you need.6

What can I do this morning?

  1. 1Remove contact lenses if your eyes or eyelids are swollen.
  2. 2For mild puffiness without warning signs, place a clean washcloth soaked in cold water across your closed eyes for a few minutes. Wrap any ice pack in a towel rather than putting it directly against your skin.
  3. 3Check whether the swelling eases as the morning passes. Swelling that persists beyond 24 to 48 hours should be assessed by an eye care professional.

How can I reduce repeat puffiness?

Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep and raise your head slightly with an extra pillow to reduce overnight fluid buildup. Limit salty foods, because salt makes the body retain water. If an eye cream, mascara or eyeshadow seems linked to swelling, stop using it for at least a couple of weeks and watch for improvement. These products can irritate the surrounding skin or cause an allergic reaction.1

For allergy symptoms, reduce exposure to known triggers rather than treating puffiness alone. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an allergy medicine based on your symptoms, age and health. Mention any new medicines if swelling began after starting them, because medication reactions can cause facial swelling.27

Lubricating drops and cool compresses can ease eye allergy symptoms. Antihistamines can help, but some allergy medicines make eyes dry. Do not use decongestant eye drops for more than five days because symptoms can rebound. Do not apply these drops with contact lenses in place. Steroid eye drops need specialist assessment and a prescription. If allergy symptoms persist despite self care, arrange an appointment.4

When should I get medical help?

Get urgent assessment for a red, hot, painful or tender swollen eyelid, pain inside the eye, light sensitivity, vision changes, or inability to open the eye. Eye symptoms with headache, vomiting, fever or feeling generally unwell also need urgent help. Do not wait for the 24 to 48 hour threshold if these symptoms occur. Sudden unexplained facial swelling needs medical assessment. Difficulty breathing or swallowing with swelling is an emergency: call your local emergency number.23
