Why does a hydrating essence feel tacky?

Mucins are proteins with sugar chains attached. Some form gels, and their functions include helping mucus adhere to surfaces and retain moisture. Slipperiness and adhesion are both part of mucus biology, so a product containing snail secretion does not have to feel like plain water. Snail secretion is mostly water, but it also contains proteins and other components; its watery content does not tell you the whole texture story.13

Snail secretion filtrate is a mixture, not one isolated ingredient. Its composition and properties depend on how the secretion is collected and processed. Treat the adhesive nature of mucin as an explanation for why tackiness is plausible, not a way to predict exactly how every snail product will feel.4

Which COSRX snail product are you using?

Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence combines two essences when pumped and contains 74.3% Triple Snail Complex plus 5% niacinamide. COSRX describes its intended finish as refreshing and not sticky. The 96% snail essence is a single phase formula, so the Dual Essence's finish description should not be applied to both bottles.2

How should you apply it?

Use these steps to check your application without rebuilding your whole routine.

1. 1Cleanse gently, then apply toner if you use one. An essence goes after toner and before moisturizer.

3. 3Gently tap the Dual Essence into skin to help absorption. If the amount you currently use feels excessive, try a smaller amount as an application experiment rather than expecting a guaranteed change in finish.
4. 4Follow with moisturizer. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

An essence can fit into either a morning or evening routine; using both is not a requirement. Keep other products unchanged while checking how the essence feels, so you can distinguish its finish from the combined feel of several layers. Add new products slowly rather than introducing several together. An essence belongs before moisturizer, not in a routine expanded until it needs a contents page.5

Do you need to change your other skincare?

COSRX allows its snail products to be used with alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid exfoliators, vitamin C and retinol. For exfoliation, the snail product goes afterwards to replenish moisture. Compatibility is not a reason to add all those products: keep the routine gentle and avoid overloading skin with active ingredients. Choose whether to keep the essence based on a comfortable routine, not whether you can assemble the longest ingredient list.35

When should you stop using it?

Separate an unpleasant texture from a reaction. If you develop itching, redness, a rash or burning, stop using the product and contact a healthcare professional. Cosmetics can cause allergic reactions, including itchy red rashes. Seek immediate medical attention for trouble breathing or swallowing. If you have sensitive skin, test a new product on your inner arm before applying it to your face, and check the ingredient panel for known allergens.567
