Why does it happen when you rub your face?

Repeated rubbing can encourage pilling. Circular rubbing and rubbing in straight lines produced the most pilling events in testing involving layered skincare, sunscreen and foundation. Your skin also plays a part: lower hydration and oiliness were linked with pilling across both sunscreen and foundation. Dryness can contribute, but pilling alone does not tell you your skin type or identify which product is responsible.1

A moisturizer does not have to disappear completely to do its job. Some moisturizing ingredients form a protective layer on the surface that slows water loss. A useful surface layer is not the same thing as loose product balls, so rubbing until every trace disappears is not a useful finish line.3

How to stop moisturizer pilling

  1. 1Start with a gently cleansed face. Gently pat dry rather than scrubbing with a towel.
  2. 2Apply your usual medication or treatment after cleansing, unless its directions specify a different order. Follow the separate spacing advice below for steroid creams.
  3. 3Layer lighter skincare textures before thicker ones. If you use a serum, apply it before moisturizer.
  4. 4Avoid applying an excessive amount of cosmetic moisturizer. Spread it gently rather than repeatedly working it into the skin. For prescribed emollients, follow the amount advised for your condition.
  5. 5Leave at least 60 seconds between ordinary skincare layers. This is a practical starting point, not a reason to keep rubbing while you wait.
  6. 6Finish morning skincare with sunscreen, then apply makeup if you wear it. At night, leave out sunscreen.

What if it only happens under sunscreen or makeup?

If moisturizer sits comfortably alone but rolls off when another product goes on, investigate the combination rather than automatically replacing the moisturizer. Incompatible formulas can pill when layered. Try removing an optional layer or changing one product at a time to find a combination that spreads better. Fewer optional layers give the products fewer opportunities to disagree in public.2

Should you exfoliate or switch to a lighter moisturizer?

Do not treat dry, peeling skin as a reason to exfoliate more. Exfoliating already dry skin can strip away more moisture; moisturizing is the better response. Apply moisturizer promptly after washing, while the skin still holds moisture. Choose texture for your skin's needs rather than pilling alone: creams and ointments provide more moisture protection than lotions, while gels feel lighter and are an option for oily skin. Switching very dry skin to a light lotion just to change the finish can leave the dryness poorly addressed.7

Does the waiting time change with prescription creams?

Yes. Ordinary skincare spacing is different from spacing a moisturizing treatment around a medicine. Leave 20 to 30 minutes between an emollient and another treatment for a skin condition, and ask your doctor which goes first. For a topical steroid, allow at least 30 minutes before or after the emollient. Emollient creams and ointments should be smoothed on, not rubbed in; a thin layer can be left to soak in for about 10 minutes.56

When is it more than a pilling problem?

Stop using an emollient that makes your skin itchy or sore. Persistent burning or stinging, inflamed hair follicles or a new facial rash need advice from a pharmacist, nurse or doctor. If dryness becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating despite moisturizing, make an appointment with a dermatologist rather than continuing to troubleshoot the product layers.567
