Why does moisturizer sting?

Cold weather, harsh soaps, frequent washing, and hot showers can dry skin or damage the skin barrier, its outer protective layer. Urea and other acidic ingredients can sting on scratched or fissured skin. Contact dermatitis, a rash from direct contact with a substance, can be an irritant reaction or an allergy. Fragrance and botanical ingredients are common allergens, and some preservatives can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. Moisturizers can contain ingredients that irritate or trigger allergy; the word on the jar is a job title.1234

Irritant reactions can burn or hurt; allergic reactions often itch and may cause a red or patchy rash, sometimes with bumps or blisters. An allergic reaction often appears 24 to 48 hours after exposure, and a product you have used for years can become a problem after a formula change or a new allergy develops. If you have rosacea, burning, stinging, or itching from facial or hair products signals irritation that can trigger a flare. A dermatologist can help choose products for rosacea prone skin.456

Why does moisturizer sting when my skin is dry?

Dry skin can feel rough or tight, flake, or crack, especially after bathing. Cold dry air, indoor heating or air conditioning, long hot showers, repeated washing, soaps, and some medicines can contribute. Keep washing short and warm rather than hot, skip scrubbing, pat dry, and apply moisturizer while skin remains damp. A lighter gel or lotion generally suits the face unless it is very dry, since facial skin is thinner and more sensitive; the bottle does not get a vote, though its label still arrives with a confident tone. For dry skin, moisturizer can be used two or three times a day or as often as needed. For dry, sensitive skin, avoid fragrance and botanical ingredients; fragrance free on its own does not rule out every allergen.23

Should I stop using a moisturizer that stings?

Not automatically for a brief sting that settles: when irritation is transient, the moisturizer can generally be continued. Stop using the suspected leave on product if a rash appears or burning does not settle after a few days, and avoid the suspected trigger. A wash emollient needs different handling: rinse it off if it stings, and ask a pharmacist for another option if the sting does not settle after rinsing. Contact dermatitis often clears in two or three weeks, but can return if the cause is not found and avoided.1457

How can I soothe skin that stings after moisturizer?

  1. 1Stop applying the suspected moisturizer and wash the area with plenty of water to remove any remaining irritant.
  2. 2Hold a clean, cool, damp towel on the area for 10 to 15 minutes, a few times a day.
  3. 3Before spreading a replacement moisturizer across your face, test it on a small area of skin.
  4. 4If the test area tolerates it, apply a moisturizer or barrier repair cream while skin is still damp after washing.

Ask a pharmacist, nurse, or doctor if burning or stinging does not settle after a few days. See a dermatologist for a rash that blisters, comes and goes, or causes discomfort, or if you cannot identify the cause of repeated reactions; patch testing can help investigate an allergy. Get medical help for a severe reaction, a reaction that does not improve with treatment, signs of infection such as tenderness, redness, warmth, or fever, itching that keeps you from sleeping, or open cuts or sores from scratching.1457
