Does sunscreen make you sweat more?

During exercise, your body produces more heat, and sweat evaporation helps carry that heat away. In young adults exercising in hot dry and warm humid conditions, tested mineral and chemical sunscreens left sweating rates, sweat evaporation and body cooling unchanged compared with wearing no sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen did not change the temperature and humidity limits at which those participants could maintain heat balance.12

Results have differed between formulas. In a separate test of 20 active young adults, one sunscreen classified as mineral reduced local sweating on the back, while a chemical sunscreen did not differ from bare skin. The ingredient responsible was unknown. Sweating results differ between formulas, so the mineral versus chemical label is not a reliable crystal ball. Those results concern sweating during exercise, rather than the immediate sensation on your face after application.1

How to apply sunscreen when you sweat

  1. 1Choose broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
  2. 2Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors. Use it every day you will be outside, on skin not covered by clothing.
  3. 3Use at least 1 teaspoon for your face. Do not reduce the amount just to make the sunscreen feel less noticeable.
  4. 4If you use a facial spray, spray it onto your hands first, then apply it to your face. Never spray directly around your face or mouth, and rub it in for even coverage.
  5. 5Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Water resistance does not remove the need for another application.

Would another sunscreen feel better?

Sunscreen is available as creams, lotions, gels, ointments, sticks and sprays, a sizeable menu for one job. Choose the texture you prefer while keeping the same protection requirements. Gels suit oily complexions; creams suit dry skin and facial application. Switching texture is a practical choice for comfort, not a treatment for sweating. For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both.4

Does water resistant mean sweatproof?

No sunscreen is waterproof or sweatproof. Water resistant sunscreen still needs reapplication after sweating, including when the SPF number is high. A higher SPF does not make sunscreen last longer. Keep shade and protective clothing in the plan too, because sunscreen alone cannot fully protect you. If choosing a sunscreen remains difficult, a dermatologist can help you select a suitable type.34
