What makes the formula feel heavy?

Occlusives are ingredients that form a surface barrier to slow water loss. That layer is useful for dry skin, but it can also account for a greasy finish. Ointments are generally the richest option; creams are lighter than ointments, while lotions suit milder dryness. The practical change is to choose a less rich texture, not to remove every ingredient that holds moisture in.3

Creams are generally thicker than lotions. Gels usually have a water or alcohol base and liquefy on contact with skin. Manufacturers use these names differently, so the word "gel" alone is not enough to choose a formula. Judge the actual texture, and check the ingredients if alcohol tends to sting your cracked or sore skin.4

Does humid air replace moisturizer?

Humectants, such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, attract water into the skin's outer layer, including from humid air. Occlusives help keep that water there. Many moisturizers combine water attracting, smoothing and sealing ingredients in one formula. One moisturizer can cover several hydration jobs, so the routine does not need a separate department for each.1

You can still have dry, irritated skin in hot, humid weather, particularly after sun exposure, swimming or time in air conditioning. Base your moisturizer use on whether your skin feels dry, not the humidity reading alone. If dryness persists, use a mild cleanser, warm rather than hot water, and a fragrance free moisturizer after bathing.5

How to make your routine lighter

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser. After exercise or extended time outdoors sweating, shower rather than leaving sweat on your skin.
  2. 2If your skin needs moisturizer, apply a lighter formula after washing, while some water remains on your skin. After a shower or bath, apply within a few minutes.
  3. 3Leave out an extra balm or heavy sealing layer unless your skin needs intensive support for very dry or cracked areas. A single moisturizer can already supply several types of moisturizing ingredients.
  4. 4Keep sunscreen in the daytime routine. Choose broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours outdoors. If sunscreen alone leaves your skin comfortable without dryness, a separate daytime moisturizer is not always necessary.

A summer routine can use fewer products, even if the bathroom shelf would prefer to remain fully employed.2

How often should you moisturize?

There is no single schedule for every level of dryness. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturizer at night; very dry skin needs richer products and more frequent application. For skin affected by sweat related breakouts, a lighter moisturizer morning and night is another option. Adjust the routine to dryness and comfort rather than keeping a heavy cream out of habit.23

What if you use acne treatments?

Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, prescription retinoids and isotretinoin can dry and irritate skin. Daily moisturizer can help you tolerate those treatments even when your skin feels oily. Choose a product labeled oil free, noncomedogenic or "won't clog pores." These descriptions mean breakouts are less likely, not impossible. Thick moisturizers can contribute to clogged pores in hot, sweaty conditions, particularly with sunscreen layered over them.27

When is it more than a texture problem?

A heavy finish is different from burning, stinging or a rash. Stop using a moisturizer if contact dermatitis develops. If a rash lingers or worsens, or breakouts are not improving with your current routine, see a dermatologist. When sweating, blot with a clean towel instead of rubbing, which can irritate skin.35
