What could be causing the sting?

Very dry skin can itself feel itchy, cracked or sting. People with eczema or rosacea also commonly report burning and stinging with moisturizers. These are general explanations for moisturizer reactions, not a diagnosis of your reaction to Hydro Boost. A moisturizer is meant to add moisture and limit water loss, not turn hydration into an endurance test.14

Fragrance can irritate dry skin, and fragrances and preservatives can cause cosmetic allergies. Check the ingredient list on your own Hydro Boost container before blaming either: the product name alone cannot identify the trigger. A reaction can also develop after years of using a cosmetic without problems, so previous comfortable use does not rule out a new allergy.45

Is it irritation or an allergy?

Stinging alone cannot distinguish irritation from allergy. Irritant contact dermatitis, meaning skin inflammation caused by an irritating substance, can appear immediately or within 48 hours. Symptoms range from dryness, redness and burning to painful blisters. Allergic contact dermatitis can involve intense itching, swelling and a rash that appears later, often more than 12 hours after contact. Redness can be harder to see on darker skin, so pay attention to discomfort, itching and swelling too.56

What should you do now?

  1. 1Stop applying the Hydro Boost product that causes the reaction. Avoiding the irritant or allergen is the main step toward improvement.
  2. 2Simplify your routine. Using several anti aging products together can irritate skin. Do not exfoliate dry, peeling skin; exfoliation can strip away more moisture.
  3. 3Choose a replacement moisturizer without fragrance and a fragrance free cleanser. A pharmacist can help you find an alternative if moisturizers keep causing discomfort.
  4. 4Apply the replacement moisturizer immediately after washing, while skin is still damp. Smooth it into the skin rather than rubbing vigorously. For excessively dry skin, choose something comfortable enough to use at least twice daily.

Would a different moisturizer help?

If dryness is the main problem, a cream or ointment retains more moisture than a light gel. A gel can feel lighter than a cream, but texture is not a character reference. For inflamed skin, creams and lotions are generally more suitable; ointments suit very dry areas that are not inflamed. Choose "fragrance free" rather than relying on "unscented," which can still contain fragrance used to mask other smells.245

Before putting a new product on your face, test a small amount on your inner forearm twice daily for four to five days. Use it more widely only if the area remains free of redness, itching and other reactions. This home check is different from a dermatologist's patch testing, which investigates specific cosmetic allergens.35

When should you get medical help?

See a dermatologist if changing your routine does not help, or dryness becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating. Seek immediate medical advice for a severe reaction, rapidly worsening symptoms, discharge, increasing pain, or feeling unwell or shivery. Difficulty breathing or collapse after a reaction requires emergency help. If a prescribed skincare product also stings, ask the prescriber before stopping that medicine; do not apply the same rule to prescriptions as to Hydro Boost.3456
