The directions below are for US Differin Gel containing adapalene 0.1%; if you use a prescription strength or another formulation, follow your prescription directions.23

Why does Differin cause peeling?

Adapalene is a retinoid, a medicine with vitamin A activity that regulates skin cell turnover to help prevent clogged pores. The early adjustment period is called retinization. It can involve dryness, scaling, redness and burning or stinging. Applying too much, applying too often, or combining several acne treatments can worsen irritation.12

How long should peeling last?

Early side effects usually peak during weeks two to four, then begin to subside. Some people notice fewer breakouts after two weeks, but the full benefit of adapalene can take eight to twelve weeks or longer. Peeling is not required for Differin to work, so visible flakes are not a progress report. Acne can also temporarily worsen as previously unseen pimples reach the surface; that is different from dry, scaling skin.134

What should I do about mild peeling?

  1. 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Avoid scrubbing and repeated washing. Once or twice a day, plus after exercise, is enough.
  2. 2Apply a thin layer of Differin to clean, dry skin across the entire acne affected area. For facial acne, that means the whole face. Avoid the eyes, lips and mouth, and wash your hands afterward.
  3. 3Follow with a gentle moisturizer. Use Differin only once daily, at roughly the same time. Morning or evening is allowed; adapalene is commonly applied at bedtime.
  4. 4Use sunscreen when outdoors and limit sun exposure, including tanning beds. If you apply Differin during the day, let the gel dry before applying sunscreen.

Differin is not a spot treatment, despite the understandable appeal of giving one pimple its own appointment.2

Which moisturizer should I use?

Daily moisturizer can help your skin tolerate drying acne medicines, even if your skin normally feels oily. Look for a moisturizer labelled "oil free," "noncomedogenic" or "won't clog pores." Noncomedogenic means unlikely to cause acne. If a moisturizer makes your breakouts worse, stop using that product. You do not need to choose a Differin branded moisturizer.56

What can make the irritation worse?

Avoid salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid and glycolic acid products alongside Differin, plus abrasive cleansers and products that dry your skin. Do not wax treated areas. Tell your doctor about other acne medicines and skincare products you use, especially if they are prescribed. Do not apply Differin to sunburned, cut, scraped or eczema affected skin.123

Should I use Differin less often?

For mild early dryness, moisturizer and correct application can help. If irritation continues, ask your dermatologist about using a smaller amount, applying less often, or putting moisturizer on first. Make those changes with their help rather than replacing the once daily directions with a guessed schedule. Mention any previous irritation from retinoids; irritation alone does not usually mean an allergy.7

When should I stop or get medical help?

Stop and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe or remains troublesome. Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Stop and seek medical advice for a suspected allergic reaction, including rash or hives. Ask a doctor if acne has not improved after three months. If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a doctor before use; stop and contact a doctor if you become pregnant or plan pregnancy.123
