What does urea do for dry skin?
Urea is already part of the skin's natural moisturising factor, the mixture of substances that helps the outer layer retain moisture. In a cream, urea acts as a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water. It can also reduce water escaping through the skin surface. At higher concentrations, urea has a keratolytic action: it helps break down the protein structure in thickened skin. That makes urea useful when dryness comes with roughness and scaling, rather than simply a lack of moisture.3
Which strength is used for what?
| Urea concentration | Common use |
|---|---|
| 5% | Moisturising moderately dry skin and maintenance when a urea preparation is needed. |
| 10% | Intensive care for very dry, thickened skin, or maintenance after treating hard foot skin. |
| 25% | Heel balms for callused, cracked and hard foot skin. |
The right choice depends on the area and whether the goal is treating thickened skin or maintaining improvement. A 10% cream can serve either role in different treatment plans. For ordinary mild dryness, a standard moisturiser can be enough. The aim is comfortable, less rough skin, not a collection of increasingly impressive percentages.14
How do you use a urea cream?
- 1Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser without dyes or perfume. Avoid prolonged bathing, which can contribute to dryness.
- 2Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it. Apply the moisturiser while the skin is still damp, particularly shortly after bathing.
- 3Apply generously and regularly enough to control dryness. These are general moisturiser principles; the frequency for a particular urea cream should follow its directions.
- 4After an intensive treatment phase, move to a standard moisturiser or a lower concentration urea preparation when maintenance is needed.
A moisturiser remains useful after roughness improves, even though maintenance gets less glamorous billing than treatment. A tendency to dry skin can persist, so finishing a stronger cream does not necessarily mean finishing moisturising.26
What improvement can you expect?
The goals are better hydration, softer rough areas and less scaling. In a small observational study, 20 women with hand eczema used a particular 30% urea cream at least twice daily for about four weeks. Skin hydration increased, while water loss and redness decreased. Treat that as an example of improvement over weeks with a specific formula, not a reason to choose 30% for everyday dryness. Concentration, the rest of the formula and the condition being treated all matter.3
Is urea useful for eczema?
Urea is one of the moisturising ingredients used in atopic eczema because it helps prevent excessive water loss. Moisturisers support the skin barrier, but inflamed, very itchy areas can need separate treatment. Some urea creams also contain an ingredient for itch relief; that extra benefit belongs to the combined formula, not automatically to every urea cream.257
Who should be careful?
Higher concentrations can cause mild irritation. If a cream irritates your skin, stop using it rather than increasing the amount. Urea can also increase the penetration of topical medicines, including corticosteroids, so check how to combine it with prescribed skin treatments. Keep urea cream away from the eyes; if accidental contact occurs, rinse well with water and seek medical advice. Emollients carry a fire risk. Seek medical care for very inflamed, persistently itchy skin or dryness that could reflect an underlying health problem, rather than repeatedly moving to a stronger cream.135
