Does magnesium cream raise your magnesium levels?

Magnesium applied to the skin is not a reliable way to correct magnesium deficiency. Healthy skin limits absorption from outside the body, and magnesium ions in magnesium chloride solution have difficulty crossing its fatty outer barrier. Magnesium's essential roles inside the body do not mean that rubbing it onto your hands supplies a useful dose. Treat magnesium hand cream as skin care, not a supplement that happens to come in a tube.2

How should you choose and use one?

  1. 1Identify the purpose. For dry hands, look for moisturising and barrier ingredients rather than choosing by the word magnesium alone. Petroleum based products reduce water loss effectively; dimethicone barrier creams feel less greasy.
  2. 2Apply for the type of product. General barrier creams are applied sparingly and reapplied as necessary. For an ordinary moisturising cream, applying while skin is slightly wet helps it work more effectively.
  3. 3Follow prescription directions separately. Tetrix directions specify application two to three times daily or as directed by a physician. If you also use a prescribed topical steroid, apply it to active areas first, wait a few minutes, then apply your moisturiser.

What should you expect, and who should be careful?

Barrier creams can remain on the skin for several hours, even after gentle washing. Their practical role is to help prevent drying and protect against irritants, not to provide a predictable magnesium dose. Sensitive skin can react to fragrances, preservatives or other components. Most barrier creams should not be applied directly to broken skin. For cracks and sores, choose bland preparations and avoid alcohol or acidic formulas. Stinging can occur with creams, and changing the formulation can help.34
