Moisturising products work particularly well immediately after bathing because water that has entered the skin can be retained, but they can also be applied at other times. If your skin has already dried, you can still apply a moisturising product; the routine does not need a restart button. If your serum contains other active ingredients, follow that product's directions rather than treating it as a plain moisturiser.23

Why does damp skin help?

Glycerin is a humectant, an ingredient that attracts and holds water in the outermost skin layer. Applying moisturising products after washing helps retain the moisture already there. Damp skin is therefore a useful starting point, not a special switch that activates glycerin.23

Holding water and reducing its evaporation are different jobs. Occlusive ingredients form a protective layer that slows water loss, while emollient ingredients soften and smooth the skin. Moisturisers often combine these functions. For a lightweight moisturising serum, following with a cream is a practical way to add moisture retention, especially if your skin is dry.24

How should you apply it?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and warm rather than hot water.
  2. 2Gently pat your skin with a clean towel rather than rubbing it completely dry.
  3. 3Apply your moisturising glycerin serum while the skin is still slightly damp, using the amount directed on its label.
  4. 4Follow with a moisturiser to help retain water. For dry skin, choose a cream or ointment rather than a lotion.

Does it have to be morning or night?

General moisturising care can be used throughout the day whenever skin feels dry; it is not restricted to bedtime. How often you need a moisturiser depends on the dryness and the product. Slightly dry skin can need only a light moisturiser at night, while very dry skin can need more frequent application. Use your serum's directions for its own schedule rather than borrowing the frequency recommended for an eczema cream.23

Creams absorb relatively quickly and can suit daytime use. Ointments are thicker, greasier and useful for very dry skin or nighttime use.15

How quickly can hydration improve?

Hydration can improve within hours. In a trial involving 20 healthy women, a fluid containing 5% glycerin, 1% hyaluronic acid and Centella asiatica increased forearm hydration at one hour, eight hours and 24 hours after a single application. The same fluid also reduced water loss through the skin at 24 hours. For everyday dry skin care, regular moisturising helps maintain skin flexibility and supports the skin barrier, the outer layer that limits moisture loss.46

What if your skin is sensitive or you use prescriptions?

For dry, sensitive skin, choose fragrance free products and introduce only one new product at a time so a reaction is easier to trace. Stop a product if an itchy, inflamed contact dermatitis rash develops. Tell a dermatologist about burning, stinging or irritation, and seek help if dryness continues despite moisturising.123

If you use a steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition, keep the moisturising cream or ointment separate from that treatment. Allow 20 to 30 minutes between applications and ask your prescriber which goes first. This helps avoid diluting the treatment or spreading it onto skin that does not need it.5
