Which dry faces does it suit?

Atoderm Intensive Baume is a reasonable choice for a very dry face that feels tight or uncomfortable. The Canadian and Australian versions are fragrance free, and Bioderma describes their texture as non sticky and non oily. For combination skin, use moisturiser on dry areas rather than automatically covering oily areas too. A face and body label does not require you to moisturise both in one sitting.124

The Canadian and Australian ingredient lists include glycerin, mineral oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, cholesterol, and ceramides NP, AP and EOP. Ceramides are fats that help hydrate skin. Creams and ointments generally preserve more moisture than lotions, making richer moisturisers useful for dry skin. Check your packaging for the formula you actually own, because similar names are not a formula matching system.124

How to apply it to your face

  1. 1Wash with a gentle, fragrance free cleanser and warm water. Pat your face gently rather than rubbing it dry.
  2. 2Apply Atoderm Intensive Baume to clean skin. Applying moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp helps trap water; this is general dry skin guidance.
  3. 3Massage gently until absorbed. For adults using the Canadian or Australian pump bottle, Bioderma allocates one pump to the face and neck together.
  4. 4Use once or twice daily, in the morning, evening, or both. Keep sunscreen in your daytime routine: choose broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

While your face is dry and peeling, moisturise rather than exfoliating. Avoid adding alpha hydroxy acids, fragranced products or harsh cleansers. A peeling face needs moisture, not an exfoliation committee. If dryness continues despite regular moisturising, get advice rather than simply adding more products.24

What results should you expect?

The aim is less discomfort and better moisture retention. Bioderma reports immediate soothing for the Canadian and Australian versions. Longer term eczema results concern children with moderate atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema, using the balm twice daily for six months. Treat ordinary facial dryness as a moisturising problem, not a promise of six months without symptoms.12

For the French AD Intensive Baume, Bioderma reports hydration lasting 24 hours in testing involving 10 people. Its formula description includes coconut, jojoba and meadowfoam oils and pro ceramides. These details belong to AD Intensive Baume, not automatically to every Intensive Baume bottle.3

What about dry eyelids?

Atoderm Intensive eye is a separate product studied for eyelid eczema. It is not Intensive Baume. Eyelid skin is particularly thin and vulnerable to irritation, so persistent eyelid dryness or a rash deserves medical advice rather than treating the two products as interchangeable.56

When should you be careful?

If you use a prescribed steroid cream or another skin treatment, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and an emollient, meaning a moisturising treatment. Ask your doctor which to apply first. The French AD version is described as compatible with topical corticosteroids, but moisturiser does not replace treatment for an underlying skin condition.357

Do not apply the French AD version to weeping skin. Get advice if moisturiser causes burning, stinging, irritation, a new facial rash or inflamed follicles. See a dermatologist if dryness persists or becomes painful, cracked or bleeding. The Canadian and Australian versions exclude premature infants. Keep fabrics carrying emollient residue away from flames and cigarettes, because the residue increases their fire risk.12347
