Dry skin lacks enough moisture to stay soft, so it can feel rough, tight or itchy and develop flakes or cracks. Moisturizers are the main treatment for most dry skin: they soften the surface and support the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps keep water in and irritants out. Shins are a particularly common place for dryness, although any area can be affected.12

Should you choose lotion, cream or ointment?

FormatWhat matters for dry skinWhen to choose it
LotionGenerally holds less moisture in the skin than cream or ointment.Consider it when dryness is less severe and you prefer it; move to something thicker if dryness persists.
CreamUsually more effective than lotion for dry skin.A useful starting point for dry body skin, especially when an ointment feels too greasy.
OintmentThick, greasy and longer lasting, usually with fewer preservatives that can sting or irritate.Choose it for very dry areas or when a greasier finish is acceptable.
234

Choose by the severity of the dryness, how well your skin tolerates the product, your preferences, cost and availability. You can use a cream during the day and a greasier ointment at home, where the dress code can accommodate a shinier finish. For extremely dry skin, apply cream or ointment throughout the day rather than relying on lotion alone.234

Which ingredients help dry skin?

Ingredient groupWhat it doesExamples
HumectantsAttract water to help hydrate the skin.Glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea and lactic acid.
OcclusivesReduce moisture loss.Petrolatum, dimethicone and lanolin.
EmollientsSmooth and soften dry skin; some also reduce moisture loss.Mineral oil and shea.
CeramidesHelp support the skin's moisture barrier.Ceramide EOS, ceramide NP and ceramide AP.

Look for a formula that combines ingredients that attract water, reduce water loss and soften skin, rather than choosing by one headline ingredient. Expensive moisturizers do not necessarily work better than cheaper ones, so the receipt is not the useful part of the formula.5

What should sensitive skin avoid?

Choose fragrance free products, especially if your skin is sensitive or you have allergies. Fragrances and botanical ingredients can cause allergic reactions; a fragrance free label does not mean every ingredient is suitable for someone with an allergy. Essential oils and plant extracts are not automatically gentler choices.5

Fragrance free and unscented are different descriptions. An unscented product can still contain irritating chemicals also found in fragranced products. Treat flaky skin gently: avoid scrubbing or repeatedly exfoliating it away, because exfoliation can remove more skin than intended and create further damage. Use a soft touch when washing, drying and moisturizing.6

How to apply body moisturizer

  1. 1Wash with lukewarm rather than hot water. Keep baths and showers to five to 10 minutes.
  2. 2Pat dry until you are no longer dripping, leaving a little water on the skin. Apply moisturizer within three minutes of getting out.
  3. 3Use clean hands. For a tub, take out the moisturizer with a clean spoon or spatula rather than putting your fingers inside; a pump can dispense directly onto clean hands.
  4. 4Smooth the moisturizer over all affected areas in the direction of hair growth. Aim for a thin, shiny layer rather than rubbing vigorously.
  5. 5Repeat after every bath or shower, and reapply whenever needed to prevent dryness.

How often should you use it?

Use body moisturizer every day. Morning and bedtime are useful opportunities, alongside application after washing. For dry skin needing regular emollient care, two to four applications a day is a practical starting point, with extra applications as needed. The drier the skin, the thicker the moisturizer should generally be, particularly on the hands.124

Check what is taking moisture away as well as what you are putting back. Frequent bathing, soap, detergents, rough clothing, low humidity and direct heat can aggravate dryness. Reduce bathing frequency if it is contributing, and replace standard soap with a suitable soap substitute. Some emollients can serve as a wash product, but not every moisturizer is suitable for that use.24

How long does dry skin take to improve?

When home care is effective, dry skin tends to improve within two weeks. That means regular moisturizing and reducing the things that keep drying the skin, not just changing bottles. Effective treatment supports the outer skin layer and improves comfort. A tendency to dryness can persist long term, or improve once contributing factors are controlled, so continued moisturizing can still be needed after the skin feels better.23

What if you also have body acne?

For acne prone areas, look for labels such as oil free, noncomedogenic or won't clog pores. Noncomedogenic means the product is unlikely to cause acne. Moisturizing daily can help skin tolerate drying acne treatments, including benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tretinoin and isotretinoin. Apply moisturizer when skin feels dry and after washing to help retain water. These are general selection and application principles, not a reason to change your prescribed acne treatment.7

Can body moisturizer replace face cream or sunscreen?

A body moisturizer and a face moisturizer can be different products, even if both departments report to the same bathroom. Choose products intended for the area you are treating. Ordinary emollients are not sun protection; use sunscreen on exposed skin unless the moisturizer itself includes sun protection.14

What precautions matter?

  • If a moisturizer causes irritation, stop using it and seek advice from your medical team.
  • If you use a topical corticosteroid, a steroid medicine applied to skin, separate it from the emollient by 30 minutes in either order.
  • Some emollients contain flammable paraffin. Avoid smoking, naked flames and other fire sources while the product is on skin, clothing, dressings or bandages.
  • Emollients can make baths and showers slippery.
  • Before ultraviolet light treatment or radiotherapy, ask your treatment team about moisturizer use.

When should you see a doctor?

Arrange an assessment if dryness is not improving after about two weeks of consistent care, worsens or keeps returning. Severe dryness can crack and bleed, leaving openings where infection can develop. Dryness can also reflect eczema, medication effects or an underlying health condition, rather than dry air alone. If dry or thickening skin develops during cancer treatment, see a dermatologist promptly. Persistent dryness sometimes needs treatment beyond moisturizer.13
