Why ordinary body wash is not always enough
Acne develops when hair follicles, the openings where hair grows, become blocked with excess oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria can grow inside the blocked follicles and cause inflammation and pus. Cleaning the skin's surface is useful, but acne treatment also needs to address blocked follicles or inflammation. Back acne is not simply a request to wash harder.2
Should you choose benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid?
Match the treatment to the spots you have. Pick a wash by what it treats, not by how dramatically the bottle describes being clean. The choices below apply general acne guidance to back acne; follow the directions on the particular body wash you buy.1
| What to compare | Benzoyl peroxide | Salicylic acid |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting match | Mild pimples | Blackheads and whiteheads |
| What it does | Fights bacteria, helps prevent clogged pores and reduces inflammation | Unclogs pores and exfoliates, helping remove dead skin cells |
| Strength | Products range from 2.5% to 10%; general adult acne advice starts at 2.5% to limit irritation | 2% is commonly found in acne face washes; use the strength and directions on your body wash label |
| Practical drawback | Can cause dryness, irritation or burning, and can bleach coloured washcloths | Still requires a gentle routine rather than extra scrubbing or harsh exfoliation |
If your skin gets dry easily, consider the cleanser texture as well as the treatment ingredient. Creamy cleansers tend to provide more hydration than foaming or gel cleansers. Added ingredients can also irritate skin, so a longer ingredient list is not a reason to choose a wash. Salicylic acid is an option for skin that dries out easily, but that does not make every salicylic acid formula suitable for sensitive skin.3
How to use an acne body wash
- 1Read the label before starting. Use the wash at the frequency directed, and follow any contact time stated for that product.
- 2Wet your skin. Apply the cleanser with your fingers and massage gently rather than scrubbing.
- 3Rinse with warm water. There is no single contact time to apply to every acne wash.
- 4Pat your skin dry with a soft, clean towel.
General acne care includes gentle cleansing twice a day, but that is not an instruction to use every medicated body wash twice daily. Let the product label set the treatment schedule. Finger application keeps cleansing gentle, without appointing a shower brush head of operations. If you use a washcloth with benzoyl peroxide, choose a white one because benzoyl peroxide bleaches coloured cloth.23
What else belongs in the routine?
- Choose skincare labelled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing, especially when exercising or sweating.
- Avoid scrubbing, picking and squeezing. Scrubbing can worsen acne, and picking or squeezing can cause scars.
- Avoid harsh exfoliating cleansers. Excess exfoliation can leave skin dry and irritated.
- If you already use prescription acne treatment, ask your pharmacist or prescriber which wash fits that plan rather than adding another treatment yourself.
How long does an acne wash take to help?
Start with one acne treatment and use it as directed for 6 to 8 weeks before adding another. General acne treatment timelines are fewer breakouts after 4 to 8 weeks and clearing around 16 weeks when treatment works. These are not wash specific deadlines. Look for fewer new spots rather than expecting existing acne to disappear after a few showers. If consistent treatment is not helping after several weeks, arrange medical advice.1
Who should get advice before treating back acne?
If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, speak to a dermatologist before starting acne treatment, including products sold without a prescription. Dryness, irritation and burning are possible with benzoyl peroxide; ask a pharmacist for help if the wash irritates your skin. Dark marks left after acne clears are another reason to seek treatment advice, rather than responding with harder scrubbing.1
Store benzoyl peroxide products as directed and pay attention to expiry information. Benzoyl peroxide can break down into benzene at high temperatures or when stored for too long.4
When is body wash not enough?
See a GP or dermatologist for deep or painful spots, scarring, worsening acne, or breakouts that are not improving with treatment. Large lumps that connect under the skin, draining areas or clusters of blackheads also need assessment. These features can occur in severe acne that needs medical treatment; do not try to diagnose the condition from its appearance alone.5
Get medical help for hot, swollen skin or suspected infection. Seek urgent assessment if severe acne comes with fever, joint pain, bone pain or ulcerated skin. Acne that affects your mental health also warrants care. Prescription options include medicines applied to the skin and tablets; the choice depends on severity, not on finding a stronger shower product.26
