What does noncomedogenic actually mean?
A noncomedogenic moisturizer is unlikely to cause acne, but some products with that label still cause acne in a few people. Noncomedogenic is a useful label, not a personal reference from your pores. You sometimes need to try a different moisturizer to find one that suits you.23
Who is the cream best suited to?
The cream is designed for normal to dry skin on the face and body, so the tub is not reserved for elbows. Its rich, fragrance free formula contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone and petrolatum to help retain moisture and support the skin's protective barrier. CeraVe describes the texture as nongreasy. If you prefer a lighter texture, CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a lightweight alternative. Check your own package's ingredient list because formulas are updated.1
How should you use it with acne prone skin?
- 1Wash your face without scrubbing. For acne prone skin, wash morning and evening and after sweating.
- 2After washing, leave some water on your skin and apply moisturizer to help trap moisture.
- 3CeraVe directs you to apply the cream liberally as often as needed, day or night. Its routine order places moisturizer after treatment and before sun protection.
- 4Keep prescribed acne treatments consistent with your doctor's instructions rather than changing several products every few days.
Moisturizing is especially useful if benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, adapalene, tretinoin, tazarotene or isotretinoin leaves your skin dry or irritated. Daily moisturizer can help you tolerate those treatments. Acne improvement seen after 4 to 8 weeks with an acne friendly moisturizer involved a full treatment plan, including acne medication and cleanser; that is not a timetable for this cream to clear acne.3
What if you start breaking out?
If you suspect the cream is causing breakouts, stop using it and try another moisturizer labeled noncomedogenic or oil free. Avoid repeatedly switching your whole routine: frequent product changes can irritate skin and cause new breakouts. See a dermatologist for deep blemishes that can scar, acne that has not cleared with treatment bought without a prescription, or acne that makes you uncomfortable.2
