What does CeraVe Moisturizing Cream do?

The cream helps skin attract, hold and distribute moisture, while forming a protective layer that reduces moisture loss from the surface. The skin barrier is the outer protection that keeps moisture in and potential irritants out. Moisturizing Cream is a fairly literal name: its job is hydration and barrier support, not a surprise plot twist.23

What is in the cream?

IngredientWhat it contributes
Ceramide NP, AP and EOPThese three ceramides help maintain the skin's protective barrier.

CeraVe's MVE Delivery Technology releases moisturizing ingredients gradually. The Africa market cream is described as providing 24 hour hydration. That describes moisture delivery, not a reason to ignore dry skin until the clock runs out: the directions still allow application as often as needed.56

Who is it best suited to?

Normal to dry skin is the clearest fit, including dry areas on the face and body. CeraVe describes the US cream as rich, quickly absorbed and non greasy. The cream is sold for face and body, so the bathroom shelf does not need separate departments.14

The US cream is fragrance free and formulated not to clog pores. It also holds the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. For sensitive or eczema prone skin, check the package against any ingredients you already know cause irritation or allergies. Ask your healthcare provider about suitability if an ingredient is a concern.12

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Cleanse your skin, then gently towel dry so it stays slightly damp rather than completely dry.
  2. 2Apply the cream liberally to your face and body wherever needed. Applying moisturizer to damp skin helps trap moisture.
  3. 3If you use other skincare steps, work from lighter formulas to heavier ones. Moisturizer generally follows toner, serum and eye cream, rather than coming before them.
  4. 4At night, finish your skincare routine with moisturizer. During the day, apply a separate broad spectrum sunscreen after a moisturizer without SPF.

General facial moisturizing guidance is twice daily, morning and night. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream's own directions allow more frequent use as needed. For the face, a dime sized amount is a general starting point for creams, not a measured dose specific to this product; follow your package directions and use enough to cover the intended area.35

Choose broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher for daytime protection, including cloudy days and time near windows. Reapply sunscreen as directed and use additional sun protection measures. Moisturizing and sun protection are separate jobs when your moisturizer does not contain SPF.3

What should you expect with regular use?

The intended result is more comfortable skin that feels softer and smoother, with continued use helping maintain the protective barrier. Make moisturizing a daily habit rather than reserving the cream for occasional dry days. Hydration and reduced moisture loss are the cream's main purposes.16

Does the country or package matter?

Age guidance differs by market: CeraVe's US cream page specifies ages three years and up, while CeraVe Canada describes its Moisturizing Cream as suitable from two months. Use the directions on the package sold in your country when choosing it for a child. Ingredient lists are updated regularly, so use your own package to check the current formula.16

Is this the same as Eczema Relief Moisturizing Cream?

No. The US Eczema Relief Moisturizing cream is a separate skin protectant product with 1% colloidal oatmeal. Its labeled use is temporary relief of minor irritation and itching due to eczema or rashes, and its directions say to apply as needed. Those treatment directions belong to Eczema Relief, not the regular Moisturizing Cream.7

For Eczema Relief specifically, keep the cream out of your eyes and use it externally only. Stop using it and ask a doctor if the condition worsens, symptoms last more than seven days, or symptoms clear and return within a few days.7
