The formula details below refer to the US products; in Canada, Daily Moisturizing Lotion is also presented as Moisturizing Lotion. Intensive Moisturizing Lotion is a separate product for dry to very dry skin, because apparently two moisturizer names were not enough.23

Petrolatum is an occlusive, meaning it forms a physical barrier that helps reduce water loss. Ceramides help support the skin barrier, while hyaluronic acid helps maintain moisture. The main choice is texture and moisture retention, not a contest to find the more powerful tub.1

Which should you choose?

  • Choose the cream for very dry skin or dryness made worse by winter heating and low humidity. As general dry skin guidance, creams and ointments tend to hold more moisture in the skin than lotions.
  • Choose the lotion if you prefer a lighter layer, particularly for morning use or oilier skin.
  • Let comfort count. A lotion can still suit someone with dry skin, and liking a richer texture does not require passing a dryness exam.

Both can be used on the face, so you do not need to reserve either for your body. For sensitive skin, the cream is fragrance free and allergy tested. It is also labeled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores; that is not a promise of breakout free skin.15

How do you use either moisturizer?

  1. 1Cleanse gently, then pat your skin with a towel until it is still damp rather than completely dry.
  2. 2Apply your chosen moisturizer and gently massage it into the skin. Applying moisturizer to damp skin helps trap moisture.
  3. 3In the morning, follow with a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
67

Use moisturizer daily. CeraVe directs you to apply the cream liberally as often as needed, day or night. For dry skin, general guidance is to reapply moisturizer after washing your hands, after bathing while skin is damp, and whenever skin feels dry. You do not have to restrict either texture to one time of day.167

What should you expect?

Both use MVE technology to release moisturizing ingredients gradually for lasting hydration. The lotion offers the same hydration benefits in a lighter texture, so thickness alone is not a hydration score. With effective general dry skin care, improvement tends to appear within two weeks; use that as a checkpoint rather than a deadline for either product.246

If moisturizer causes burning, stinging or irritation, tell your dermatologist rather than treating discomfort as normal. Seek help if dryness persists or worsens despite regular care. A skin condition or medication can contribute to dryness, and changing from lotion to cream does not replace a prescribed treatment plan.47
