Which should you choose?

CeraVe is a straightforward choice for normal to dry skin when a lightweight finish matters. Its ceramides help maintain the barrier that keeps moisture in, while hyaluronic acid helps maintain moisture balance. CeraVe describes the lotion as noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores; that is not a promise of breakout free skin. Vanicream is the more targeted choice if you specifically need to avoid lanolin, masking fragrance or the other ingredients it excludes. Check your own bottle against any known ingredient allergy rather than choosing by brand alone.12

Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion is a lighter version of its cream, so the family resemblance is real even if the names do little to help. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer is a separate product with five ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Those ingredient claims should not be carried over to Moisturizing Lotion.2

How to use either lotion

  1. 1Wash gently. For dry skin, keep baths or showers to five to ten minutes and use warm water rather than hot water.
  2. 2Pat dry, leaving skin slightly damp. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands, and gently massage it into the skin.
  3. 3Reapply whenever skin feels dry. General dry skin guidance allows several applications a day; CeraVe also directs liberal application as often as needed.
  4. 4Use CeraVe after treatment products and before sunscreen. If you have prescribed skincare, follow your treatment plan rather than replacing its directions with a generic routine.

CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion and CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 are different products, despite names that appear to have been assigned by the same filing cabinet. Daily Moisturizing Lotion occupies the moisturizing step, not the sun protection step. For daytime protection, use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.35

What if a lotion is not enough?

For overly dry skin, a cream or ointment adds more moisture and is more effective than a lotion. Persistent dryness is a reason to change the approach, not simply keep comparing these two bottles. See a dermatologist if dryness continues despite regular moisturizing. Tell your dermatologist if moisturizer causes burning, stinging or irritation. Dryness associated with eczema or psoriasis can also need treatment for the underlying condition.3

What about pregnancy or nursing?

Vanicream describes its skincare products as suitable options during pregnancy and nursing because they are formulated without common irritants. That is a brand position, not a reason to disregard a known allergy or an existing treatment plan. Read the current package ingredients when choosing a lotion.4
