Microneedling already stimulates collagen production

Microneedling creates tiny punctures that trigger your skin's healing response, producing collagen and elastin, proteins that help keep skin firm and smooth. Microneedling stimulates your body's own collagen production, which makes "collagen induction therapy" unusually literal naming for a cosmetic treatment. The practical priority afterwards is caring for the treated skin, not adding a product simply because collagen appears in its name.23

What should I apply after treatment?

Follow the plan for your actual treatment. Aftercare differs between cosmetic facial microneedling and treatment of scars: a clinic can apply moisturiser immediately, while a scar treatment plan can restrict you to cooling gel initially. Needle depth also affects recovery. A collagen product's name is not a personalised aftercare plan, however confidently the packaging introduces itself.145

  1. 1Before adding collagen skincare, ask your treating clinician to approve the exact product and tell you when to start it. Use the aftercare cream or gel they have selected instead while you wait.
  2. 2If you were prescribed cooling gel for the first 24 hours, apply that gel immediately after treatment and use nothing else on the treated area during that period.
  3. 3After that initial period, follow your moisturising instructions. Chelsea and Westminster's scar aftercare plan uses a simple moisturiser three to four times daily. That schedule is not a universal direction for collagen serums.
  4. 4Keep the treated area clean. For facial acne scar treatment, a gentle cleanser before bed can be part of the plan; do not substitute that routine for a gel only instruction.
  5. 5Stay out of the sun until your skin heals and follow your clinician's sun protection instructions. Scar aftercare can require avoiding sun exposure for seven days and continuing sunscreen afterwards.

Can I use a collagen mask after microneedling?

Only use a collagen mask if your clinician includes that exact mask in your aftercare. A mask is still an additional topical product, so it does not belong in a first day routine that permits only prescribed gel. Ask for its start time, frequency and application instructions rather than borrowing directions from your usual skincare routine. Cosmetic products introduced into skin during needling have been linked to inflammatory reactions that form lumps or raised patches; do not try to needle a mask or serum into your skin at home.15

What should my skin feel like afterwards?

Treated skin can feel sunburned, tight or uncomfortable, with redness or darker colouring, swelling and later dryness or flaking. These early reactions usually settle within a few days to a week, although deeper treatment can take longer. Moisturiser can help dry, flaking skin. These recovery changes are different from the slower improvement in scars, texture or wrinkles: improvement can begin within weeks, but full results usually take several months and sometimes multiple sessions.23

When should I contact the clinic?

  • Contact your healthcare provider if bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours, blisters develop or swelling lasts longer than a week.
  • Contact your treatment team if you suspect infection or a wound has formed, rather than trying to manage it by adding another skincare product.
  • Ask your clinician before restarting retinol, tretinoin or other products paused for treatment. A usual skincare routine and a recovery routine are not automatically interchangeable.
