How does rubbing make the skin darker?

Rubbing and scratching can irritate the thin skin of your eyelids. Inflammation can leave extra melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This is called postinflammatory pigmentation: darker colour left after irritation. Eyelid eczema and contact dermatitis, an inflammatory reaction to something touching the skin, can cause the same problem. Rubbing can be both a response to itchy skin and another trigger for irritation.14

Allergies can keep that cycle going. Rubbing can transfer pollen, dust or pet dander from your hands to your eyes. It also increases histamine production, adding redness, swelling and irritation. The temporary relief comes partly from extra tears, not from fixing what made your eyes uncomfortable.5

What should you do instead of rubbing?

  1. 1Stop rubbing or scratching, and only touch your eyelids with clean, rinsed hands.
  2. 2Use a cool, damp compress for discomfort. Cold compresses can also reduce puffiness and the appearance of prominent blood vessels.
  3. 3For dry or irritated eyes, try preservative free artificial tears. Cooling the drops before use can make them more comfortable.
  4. 4If allergies cause the itching, ask about suitable allergy eye drops. Prescription and nonprescription options can help.
  5. 5If your eyelid skin is inflamed, wash with plain water or a cream cleanser designed for sensitive skin. Avoid eyelid cosmetics while the dermatitis is active.

Pay attention to products that touch your eyelids or arrive there on your fingers. Cosmetics, fragrances, nail products and hair dye can trigger eyelid contact allergy. A familiar product can still be responsible because an allergy can develop after repeated use. Sensitive skin and a history of eczema make irritant eyelid dermatitis more likely.4

Will the circles disappear when you stop?

Stopping removes a source of irritation, but the next step depends on what is making the area look dark. Pigment, visible blood vessels and shadows can occur separately or together. A cold compress helps swelling and visible vessels; it is not the same as treating pigment deeper in the skin. Age related loss of fat can create hollows that cast shadows, even without rubbing.236

Many remedies sold for dark circles lack evidence of effectiveness, so a confident jar is still just a confident jar. Deeper pigmentation responds poorly to topical treatments, and stronger products can irritate sensitive eyelids. Avoid trying to scrub or aggressively lighten the area. Use sun protection around your eyes and wear sunglasses, since sun exposure can increase pigmentation.12

Chamomile tea bags do not improve dark circles, even when the kitchen cupboard has been promoted to skincare department.6

When should you get checked?

Contact a healthcare provider if darkening or swelling affects just one eye, if swelling is excessive, or if the circles persist. Get help for recurring irritation, severe allergies or chronically dry eyes, especially if alternatives to rubbing are not helping. An itchy, scaly eyelid rash needs its trigger identified; patch testing can help identify contact allergens.145

Frequent rubbing also matters beyond skin colour. It can scratch the cornea, the clear front surface of your eye, and excessive rubbing can weaken it over time. Frequently rubbing your eyelids can also contribute to ptosis, a drooping eyelid caused by weakness of the muscle that opens the eye.56
