What is making the area look dark?
Dark circles are an appearance, not one single problem. Several causes can overlap. Thin eyelid skin lets underlying blood vessels and muscle show through. Extra pigment can darken the skin itself. Hollows beneath the eyes cast shadows, while fluid collecting in the lower eyelids adds puffiness. A shadow is not extra pigment, which is an awkward detail for a cream sold to brighten everything.3
Lighting offers a clue, not a diagnosis: overhead light can make shadows more noticeable, while light coming directly towards the face can hide them. Swelling is often worse in the morning or after a salty meal. Those changes help explain why the same area can look darker on some days without a sudden increase in pigment.3
Age changes the supporting bone, ligaments and fat around the eyes, making hollows and shadows more pronounced. Sun exposure and inflammation from eczema or contact dermatitis can contribute to pigmentation. Some medicines, including certain prescription eye drops and oral contraceptives, can also increase pigment. Tell the clinician assessing your dark circles which medicines you use.3
What can you do at home?
- 1In the morning, use a cold compress if your eyelids are puffy. Cooling can reduce the appearance of prominent blood vessels and temporary swelling.
- 2Apply SPF 30 sunscreen every day, including around the eyes, and wear sunglasses with UV protection. Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 10 am and 4 pm.
- 3During the day, avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes. Address the itch or irritation rather than repeatedly rubbing the area.
- 4At night, aim for at least seven hours of sleep. If fluid collects beneath your eyes overnight, try extra pillows to raise your head.
If puffiness is a major part of the problem, limiting salt can help. These measures target swelling and shadows associated with poor sleep; they do not all serve the same purpose. Inherited dark circles can remain despite adequate sleep, and dark circles cannot always be prevented.145
What if your eyes itch or the skin is irritated?
Allergies can contribute to darkness through swelling and irritation. Repeated rubbing can also leave increased pigment after inflammation, called post inflammatory pigmentation. Identifying and avoiding an allergen or irritant can lighten circles caused by that trigger. For unavoidable seasonal allergies, antihistamines can partially improve the darkening; ask a healthcare professional which option fits your symptoms.1
Do eye creams actually help?
Topical treatments are most relevant when pigmentation contributes to the darkness. Deeper pigment responds poorly to creams, and sensitive eyelid skin can be irritated by stronger products. Many dark circle remedies lack evidence that they work, even when the packaging has clearly put in the hours.2
Hydroquinone is a skin lightening ingredient, but irritation from it can itself cause dark circles. Stop using a lightening cream that irritates the area and discuss another approach with a dermatologist. Stronger is not a useful goal if the treatment creates more inflammation. Choosing a treatment starts with deciding whether pigment is actually the main problem.1
How can you make dark circles less visible today?
Concealer offers immediate camouflage. Apply a light reflecting concealer to the shadowed area, rather than over puffy skin, and finish with translucent powder. Yellow or gold toned concealers are options for this approach. Concealer changes the appearance rather than the cause, which is at least a job it can finish.2
Which professional treatment matches which cause?
| Main contributor | Options to discuss | What the treatment targets |
|---|---|---|
| Surface pigmentation | Topical lightening treatments or chemical peels | Pigment in the skin; peels address surface pigmentation. |
| Deeper pigmentation | Laser treatment | Pigment deeper in the skin. |
| Hollows or tear troughs | Hyaluronic acid filler or fat grafting | Lost volume and the resulting shadow. |
| Bulging lower eyelid fat | Lower eyelid surgery | Fat that can be removed or repositioned to smooth the lower eyelid. |
An examination helps separate pigment from tissue loss or bulging fat. A clinician can review your medical and family history and, when useful, assess pigment depth with a Wood lamp, a special examination light. Procedures require considerable training and experience. Improvement can be partial, and an incorrect technique can make circles more prominent.2
When is eyelid surgery worth discussing?
Blepharoplasty means eyelid surgery. Lower eyelid surgery mainly addresses bulging fat, which the surgeon removes or repositions to reduce bags and smooth hollows. Small amounts of skin can also be removed. Because pigment and bulging fat are different problems, discuss exactly which part of the appearance surgery would change.6
Choose a surgeon with significant eyelid surgery experience and ask about training and procedure numbers. Tell them about dry eye, glaucoma, retinal problems, thyroid disease, diabetes and cardiovascular conditions, as well as your medicines, including blood thinners. Risks include bleeding, infection, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes and abnormal eyelid positioning. Loss of vision is extremely rare but possible.6
How long does improvement take?
There is no single timetable because the causes differ. Hyaluronic acid filler can give immediate improvement in structural shadows, with repeat treatment needed around nine months to a year. Final eyelid surgery results appear within several weeks. During the first or second week of healing, swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes can occur. Follow the surgeon's recovery instructions and protect your eyes from sunlight.16
When should you see a doctor?
Dark circles are usually not a sign of a medical problem. Contact a healthcare provider if darkness or swelling affects only one eye, if swelling is excessive, or if persistent circles need assessment. For a child with dark circles, speak with their healthcare provider if you are concerned; possible contributors include rubbing, fatigue, dehydration, snoring and minor illnesses.4
