Why do some dark circles stay?

Dark circles describe an appearance, not a single cause, which is inconvenient for any jar promising to handle the entire department. Thin eyelid skin can reveal the blood vessels and muscle underneath. Extra melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, can darken the area too. Several causes can exist together, so treating one does not necessarily remove all the darkness.23

As facial fat and supporting tissues change with age, hollows beneath the eyes can cast shadows. Overhead lighting can deepen those shadows while direct light can hide them, giving the bathroom light more editorial control than it deserves. A change with lighting can suggest that shadowing contributes, rather than the darkness being entirely pigment in the skin.3

How long does it take for dark circles to fade?

Allergic shiners are dark circles caused by nasal allergies. Congestion slows blood flow in nearby veins, making the area beneath the eyes look darker and puffy. Sneezing, a stuffy nose and itchy or watery eyes are useful clues. With effective allergy treatment, allergic shiners usually fade within a few weeks. They can return with further exposure to allergens, including pollen, dust mites or pet dander.1

Dark circles can also be a clue to fatigue, and dehydration can make skin around the eyes look sunken. Addressing those factors is different from treating persistent pigment or structural hollows. More sleep is a sensible first step when poor sleep contributes, but it does not fill an age related hollow. There is no single fading timetable for all dark circles because the causes differ.45

What can you do at home?

  • Aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night if you are not getting enough sleep.
  • For morning puffiness, try sleeping with your head raised on extra pillows to reduce overnight fluid collection.
  • For allergy related puffiness, apply a cold compress wrapped in a light towel for up to 10 minutes, several times a day.
  • Avoid rubbing itchy eyes, which can worsen irritation and the appearance of allergic shiners.
  • Use sunscreen on your face, including around the eyes, and wear sunglasses to limit sun related pigmentation.

Chamomile tea bags do not improve dark circles, so the tea does not need a second job. Concealer can cover the color while you work out which cause needs attention.25

Can treatment remove dark circles permanently?

Treatment needs to match the cause. Pigment lightening creams, chemical peels and laser procedures are options for some dark circles. A clinician can assess whether the darkness comes mainly from pigmentation, visible underlying tissues or hollows before choosing a treatment. A pigment treatment and a treatment that restores lost volume solve different problems.23

Fillers can improve hollows, but they are temporary and require repeat treatment. They can also cause a bluish tint or fluid buildup that adds to darkness. Rarely, filler entering a blood vessel can cause permanent vision loss. People prone to eyelid swelling, including those with inflammation or allergies, are not always suitable candidates.5

Eyelid surgery offers a more lasting way to address some structural causes. Repositioning fat can improve both a bag and the hollow beneath it; simply removing fat can deepen hollows. Surgery involves a larger commitment and healing time, rather than being a universal fix for every type of dark circle.5

When should you see a doctor?

Contact a healthcare provider if darkness or swelling affects only one eye, or if swelling is excessive. For suspected allergic shiners lasting longer than a few weeks or recurring seasonally, an assessment can identify the allergy and suitable treatment. Persistent circles also deserve assessment if you want treatment rather than continued trial and error.12
