Should you use potato slices or potato juice?

Neither potato slices nor potato juice has an established method for lightening the area under your eyes. There is no dependable number of minutes, daily frequency or number of weeks to give you. Many remedies sold for dark circles lack evidence that they work, so a confident sales pitch is not an extra active ingredient.1

What can you use instead?

Apply cold spoons as a cold compress to help shrink dilated blood vessels and reduce the appearance of puffy eyelids and dark circles. Think of cooling as a way to address swelling and visible vessels, rather than a way to bleach pigment or fill a hollow. Extra pillows at night can also help prevent fluid from collecting under your eyes. These measures address puffiness, not every cause of darkness.2

Why the cause matters more than the recipe

  • Extra pigment can follow sun exposure, eyelid inflammation or repeated rubbing. This is called postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, meaning darkening after inflammation.
  • Thin skin can let underlying blood vessels show through.
  • Hollows beneath the eyes, called tear troughs, can cast shadows rather than represent darker skin.
  • Puffiness can make shadows more noticeable, and several causes can exist together.

Lack of sleep can cause both dark circles and swollen or puffy eyes. Aim for at least seven hours each night, but do not treat sleep as a cure for inherited circles or facial shadows. Dark circles can remain even after a good night's sleep. Dehydration can also make the skin around your eyes look sunken, which is another reason darkness is not always a pigment problem.4567

Use SPF 30 sunscreen every day and wear sunglasses with UV protection. Sun exposure can contribute to darkening. Avoid rubbing your eyes, particularly if they itch: repeated friction and inflammation can worsen discoloration. If allergies or eczema are driving the irritation, identifying and managing that cause is more useful than adding another home remedy.6

How can you cover dark circles now?

Concealer covers darkness without treating its cause, which is a more modest job than most miracle remedies apply for. For purple discoloration, a yellow based concealer is one option.26

  1. 1Apply concealer to the dark or shadowed area, rather than spreading it over puffy skin.
  2. 2Apply foundation matching your skin color over the concealer.

When should you stop experimenting?

Stop applying anything that causes irritation or itching around your eyes. Eyelid skin is sensitive, and stronger lightening products can irritate it. Irritation itself can lead to more pigmentation. Do not escalate from potato juice to strong bleaching creams or home peels simply because the darkness remains.136

Call a healthcare provider if darkness or swelling affects just one eye, or if you have excessive swelling. Persistent circles are also worth discussing if you want treatment. A dermatologist can distinguish pigment from visible vessels and structural shadows, then discuss suitable options. Creams target pigmentation, while fillers address selected hollows; those are different problems requiring different decisions.135
