What does the combination do?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 that supports the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps retain moisture and keep irritants out. It can also improve uneven pigmentation, redness and fine lines. Squalane helps reduce water loss and improve hydration, making the combination useful when you want moisture support alongside niacinamide's other benefits.234

Squalane can be useful if your skin still feels dry after moisturizer, or if you prefer a lighter texture to a thick face cream. Adding it is an option, not a requirement to give every bottle in the bathroom a shift.1

How should you layer them?

  1. 1Start with gentle cleansing.
  2. 2Apply your lighter niacinamide serum before the squalane oil. Niacinamide can generally be used once or twice daily, so morning or evening can fit your routine.
  3. 3Layer squalane oil over the lighter serum to help retain moisture. Follow your product's directions for the amount and frequency.
  4. 4Include broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher in your daytime routine. Niacinamide does not prevent sunburn.

That order applies to a lighter serum and a separate oil. If your niacinamide is already in a moisturizer, you can use that moisturizer rather than adding another niacinamide product. Avoid stacking several products containing niacinamide at once. For a squalane oil example, The Ordinary tells you to apply a few drops of its 100% Plant Derived Squalane once daily or as needed, on unbroken skin.26

What if your skin is oily, dry or sensitive?

Oily skin does not automatically rule out squalane. Squalane itself is noncomedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores, but other oils in a formula can change how the finished product behaves. With combination skin, you can moisturize dry areas without adding the same amount to oily areas. Very dry skin can need a cream or ointment rather than relying on a light texture alone.15

For sensitive skin, start slowly with a low niacinamide concentration; most skincare products contain 5% or less. Fragrance, preservatives and dyes in a squalane formula can trigger irritation or allergic contact dermatitis, an itchy skin reaction. Choose based on the whole formula, not just the two ingredients you wanted.12

How long do benefits take?

Niacinamide benefits are measured over weeks, which is inconvenient for a bathroom shelf expected to perform by tomorrow. A 2% niacinamide moisturizer reduced oil production over four to six weeks. A 5% topical formula improved pigmentation, texture, red blotchiness and fine lines over 12 weeks. These are examples for those formulas and concerns, not a countdown for every niacinamide and squalane routine.3

Test new products before using them together

Test each new product on a small area under your arm or at the bend of your elbow twice daily for seven to 10 days. Use the usual amount and leave it on for its normal duration. If no redness, itching or swelling develops, start using the product on your face.7

If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve discomfort. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and those measures do not help, or if you cannot identify what caused it.7
