What can niacinamide do for body skin?

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, also called nicotinamide. It supports the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps keep moisture in and irritants out. Improved barrier function reduces water loss and increases hydration. Niacinamide also has anti inflammatory effects and can help calm redness. For body use, moisture retention is a clearer reason to try it than expecting one serum to handle every concern.13

How do you apply it?

  1. 1Test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours before applying the serum more widely.
  2. 2Choose a low concentration to start if your skin is sensitive. Most niacinamide skincare products contain 5% or less.
  3. 3Cleanse gently. General niacinamide guidance allows application once or twice daily, so choose a morning or evening routine you can maintain.
  4. 4Keep moisturizer in the routine. Cleveland Clinic advises applying niacinamide after moisturizer.
  5. 5Avoid adding several niacinamide products at once. A serum, moisturizer and cleanser do not all need to contain it.

You can choose a niacinamide body moisturizer instead of adding a separate serum, because a body routine does not need its own supporting cast. Body moisturizers containing niacinamide have improved hydration and barrier function in adults with mild eczema.2

What results should you expect, and when?

Think in weeks rather than expecting an immediate change. A facial serum containing niacinamide, postbiotics and peptides improved hydration and reduced redness over four weeks in healthy participants. For body skin, niacinamide moisturizers improved hydration and reduced water loss over 28 days in adults with mild eczema who were also taking an antihistamine. Those are useful expectations for the tested formulas, not a fixed deadline for your serum.24

Niacinamide can also improve uneven pigmentation and texture. Facial use of 5% niacinamide improved pigmentation, texture and red blotchiness over 12 weeks. Some facial oil reduction results appeared after four to six weeks with a 2% moisturizer. For body dark spots or oiliness, treat these as general ingredient benefits rather than a precise timetable. The percentage on the bottle describes concentration, not how many skincare jobs the serum has agreed to take.3

What if you have eczema or sensitive skin?

Niacinamide is generally well tolerated, including by some people who cannot tolerate topical retinoids or fruit acids. For eczema, choose moisturizing care rather than treating a cosmetic serum as a replacement for prescribed treatment. The body moisturizer results involved adults with mild eczema, not people with weeping, eroded or blistered skin. If you have those symptoms or use prescription eczema treatments, ask your clinician before adding a serum to affected areas.35

Stop using the serum if it causes itching, burning, new redness or an allergic reaction. Niacinamide rarely causes these effects, but gentle does not mean impossible to react to. If repeated use causes excessive dryness, reduce application to once daily or every other day rather than continuing twice daily.13

Niacinamide does not work as sunscreen and does not prevent sunburn. Keep sunscreen separate from any decision to use niacinamide on exposed body skin.3
