What is a moisturizer with sunscreen?
A moisturizer with sunscreen combines moisture support and sun protection in one formula. Moisturizers trap water in the skin and help prevent water from evaporating. Sunscreen protects against ultraviolet rays; broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB. A combined product puts those two jobs in one bottle, a rare merger that can actually reduce paperwork in the bathroom. Check for broad spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher, rather than choosing by the word moisturizer alone. For time outdoors, choose water resistance too. In the UK, look for at least SPF 30 and at least four stars for UVA protection; a UVA symbol inside a circle indicates that the product meets the EU standard.1234
When do you still need a separate moisturizer?
Choose a formula made for your skin type. For oily skin, look for a moisturizer formulated for oily skin; for sensitive skin, look for products intended for sensitive skin and avoid heavy fragrance. If your sunscreen leaves your skin needing more moisture, use a separate moisturizer underneath it. Separate bottles are useful for extra moisture, not because your bathroom needs a larger cast. Moisturizing can immediately soften the appearance of some fine lines by plumping the skin. That is a moisturizing effect, not a reason to expect every sunscreen to do the same job. Products such as retinol can dry the skin, so keep moisturizing in your routine if you use them.125
How do you use moisturizer and sunscreen together?
- 1Cleanse your face first.
- 2Apply moisturizer if you need a separate layer of moisture.
- 3Apply sunscreen as the final skincare step, covering exposed skin, including your face, neck and ears. If a combined moisturizer and sunscreen meets both needs, use it for this step.
- 4Let sunscreen dry for a few minutes before applying makeup.
Use enough of the SPF product to follow its sunscreen directions. Applying sunscreen too thinly reduces protection, and using a combined moisturizer does not change that rule. If you cannot comfortably apply enough of the combined product, use a separate sunscreen rather than relying on a light moisturizer application. Makeup with SPF is not a substitute for that sunscreen layer.34
When should you apply moisturizer and sunscreen?
Use sunscreen every morning. Moisturizer belongs in both morning and evening routines, but sunscreen is not needed at night. For prolonged sun exposure that risks burning, apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and again just before leaving. Reapply every two hours outdoors, and straight after swimming, sweating or towel drying, even with a water resistant product. Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Sunscreen does not replace shade or protective clothing.1245
What if the product irritates your skin?
Test a new product on your inner forearm twice daily for four to five days before using it on your face. Even a product labeled hypoallergenic can cause a reaction. Stop using a product that stings or burns unless it is prescribed and your dermatologist has advised you about that effect. If you develop skin irritation or an itchy rash, stop the product and make an appointment with a dermatologist.125
