Which strength makes sense for dry skin?
Urea creams come in different strengths for different jobs. Lower strength options include 5% and 10% creams, while 25% heel balms are used for callused, fissured and hard foot skin. A lower percentage urea moisturiser can be used for maintenance after that treatment phase. The percentage describes the strength, not how seriously the cream takes its job.1
Even routine foot moisturising does not automatically require 40%: 10% or 20% urea creams are options, with a podiatrist helping choose between them. For ordinary dry skin elsewhere, an emollient, meaning a moisturiser that softens skin, is a practical starting point rather than extending a targeted treatment over unaffected skin.34
What is urea 40% cream used for?
The exact formula matters: a 40% combination cream and a 41% prescription cream are different products. Oncora Pharma's Urea 41% Cream is intended to soften dry, rough and hyperkeratotic skin, meaning skin with an excessively thick outer layer. Its listed uses include corns, calluses and certain damaged nails, with application to affected areas rather than the whole body.2
Shenzhen Xiaomai's cream lists urea 40% together with salicylic acid 2% and gives directions for facial spots. Do not treat those directions as instructions for every cream bearing the same urea percentage. The number on the front is not the entire instruction manual, however convenient that would be.5
How do you use urea 40% cream?
- 1Identify the exact cream and the area its directions cover. Follow your prescription if the cream was prescribed.
- 2For foot care, wash and dry your feet thoroughly, including between the toes. Check for cuts, blisters and wounds before applying cream.
- 3Apply to the intended areas and follow that product's frequency. Oncora's 41% cream is applied to affected areas twice daily or as a physician directs, then rubbed in until absorbed.
- 4Keep foot moisturiser out of the spaces between your toes. Allow it to absorb before putting on socks, and wait a few minutes before walking because freshly moisturised feet can be slippery.
Can you use urea 40% cream on your face?
Do not move a foot cream into your facial routine without checking its intended use. Shenzhen Xiaomai's combination cream specifically directs application to facial spots after cleansing, morning and evening. It also says not to use the cream on damaged or broken skin, to keep it out of the eyes and rinse with water after eye contact, and to stop and ask a doctor if a rash occurs.5
Who should get advice before using it?
If you have diabetes or poor circulation, get advice before treating foot callus yourself. Urea products can form part of professionally selected diabetic foot care, including 10% creams and 25% heel balms; that is not a reason to choose 40% yourself. Sensitive skin also needs attention to the whole formula: some heel balms contain potential sensitisers, not just urea.467
Stop Oncora's 41% cream and consult a physician if redness, irritation or sensitivity develops. Seek medical or podiatry advice for feet with swelling, heat, pain, discharge or redness. If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a doctor before using Shenzhen Xiaomai's combination cream, as its directions require.235
