What is urea hand cream?

Urea hand cream is a moisturizer containing urea, a substance naturally present in healthy skin. Urea attracts and retains water and softens the outer layer of dead skin so it sheds more easily. That second action is called keratolysis. Skincare creams use synthetically manufactured urea.3

Frequent hand washing exposes skin to water, soaps and chemicals. When the skin's protective barrier is impaired, moisture escapes and hands become dry and rough, giving a hand cream a fairly repetitive job.1

Which strength should you choose?

  • 5%: Choose a hand cream at this strength for everyday dry, rough hands or maintenance when continued skin softening is needed.
  • 10%: This strength is used for intensive care of very dry, thickened hand skin. After short term treatment, switch to a standard moisturizer or a 5% preparation if ongoing skin softening is needed.
  • Above 10%: Stronger preparations have a more pronounced dead skin softening action. Choose them for a specific thickened skin problem rather than as an automatic upgrade for ordinary dryness.

How do you apply urea cream to your hands?

  1. 1Check the product's directions and your skin before applying. Do not use urea on broken, cracked or bleeding skin, infected or oozing areas, or skin with severe widespread redness.
  2. 2Apply the cream smoothly. Eucerin tells you to massage its UreaRepair PLUS 5% Urea Hand Cream into your hands until fully absorbed.
  3. 3Repeat at the frequency on your product. Eucerin's 5% hand cream can be applied as often as needed. Prescription Uracin 20% Cream is applied to affected areas twice daily, or as directed by the prescriber.

A cream or gel is often preferred during the day, while a greasier ointment can suit nighttime care. A comfortable texture is worth choosing, because a cream left untouched in a drawer moisturizes nothing. Continue moisturizing even once dry skin looks normal; intensive urea treatment and ongoing maintenance are different jobs.5

How soon will your hands feel better?

Eucerin UreaRepair PLUS 5% Urea Hand Cream reduced dryness and roughness after one application in product testing, with improvement still present after six hand washings. The cream contains ceramide and other moisture binding ingredients alongside urea, so that result belongs to the complete formula.1

Urea can also support care for hand eczema, but direct research is limited. In a small observational study involving 20 women, a particular 30% urea cream used at least twice daily for about four weeks improved hydration, redness and water loss. Do not use that treatment schedule as directions for another cream.7

Who should be careful?

Urea can cause stinging, itching or a rash. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or become bothersome. Uracin 20% specifically requires stopping and contacting a healthcare practitioner if redness or irritation occurs, the condition worsens, or a rash develops. Avoid ingredients you are allergic to.36

If you use a prescription steroid on your hands, check the combination with your prescriber: urea can increase corticosteroid penetration. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, ask before using prescription Uracin 20%; pregnancy safety and passage into breast milk are unknown.36

For children aged one or older with a diagnosed dry skin condition, use urea only when a doctor recommends it. For ordinary dry skin without a diagnosis, low strength preparations can be used from age three.3

Keep urea cream out of your eyes. Keep emollients away from flames, especially clothing or bedding soaked with cream. If you cannot tell whether persistent hand symptoms are dryness or a skin condition, ask a pharmacist or dermatologist.123
