These details apply to the US formulas. Eye Repair and Skin Renewing have different priorities, despite names that sound like they attended the same marketing meeting.12

How do you apply CeraVe eye cream?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat dry.
  2. 2Apply any prescribed skin medication or treatment after cleansing, following its directions.
  3. 3Apply small dots of eye cream with your ring finger. Gently smooth until absorbed rather than pulling at the skin.
  4. 4For Skin Renewing, CeraVe includes the under eye area, crow's feet, eyelids and brow bones. Avoid direct eye contact; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
  5. 5Finish with face moisturizer and morning sunscreen. Apply makeup afterward if wanted.

Use Eye Repair in the morning, evening or both. CeraVe directs you to use Skin Renewing morning and night after cleansing, before facial serum or moisturizer. Both can be worn alone or under makeup.12

Should you use eye cream before or after moisturizer?

For Skin Renewing, use eye cream before moisturizer: CeraVe gives that order explicitly. Eye Repair's directions specify application and frequency without a separate rule about face moisturizer. Applying Eye Repair before moisturizer is a practical general routine, not a special requirement for that formula. Eye cream does not always have to come first: a thin moisturizer can precede eye cream, with a thicker moisturizer afterward at night. Keep sunscreen as the final skincare step in the morning.24

What are the before and after results of using eye cream for wrinkles?

Keeping the eye area moisturized helps skin appear smoother and plumper. Skin Renewing also targets the appearance of fine lines and crow's feet with its peptide complex. Think in terms of softer, smoother looking skin with continued use, rather than expecting existing wrinkles to disappear.2

For general context, a 12 week clinical trial of a different eye cream containing peptides, fermentation filtrate and sialic acid found improvements in fine lines and wrinkles by week eight. Hydration and elasticity also improved over 12 weeks. Keep that eight week result attached to the cream tested, rather than using it as a countdown for either CeraVe product.5

Choose Eye Repair if your main aim is an eye moisturizer for dark circles and puffiness. Choose Skin Renewing if visible lines and firmness are also priorities; the word 'renewing' still needs you to select the right job for it.2

What if your eye area is sensitive?

Both creams are ophthalmologist tested and suitable for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers. Introduce new products gradually, especially if your skin is sensitive, and patch test on your inner arm before facial use. Check the ingredients on your own package because formulas change. For eczema prone skin, CeraVe advises checking with your dermatologist before trying Skin Renewing.124

Do not add several anti aging products at once. Irritation from using too many products can make signs of aging more noticeable, not less. If the eye area becomes irritated or you have concerns about your routine, speak with a dermatologist rather than adding another treatment.3
