This comparison uses the US CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, not its foaming or oil cleanser variants. CeraVe has a cream texture, so a cleanser does not have to audition as a bubble bath. Check your package for the current ingredients, and compare equal bottle sizes before deciding which costs less.1

Which should you choose?

  • Choose CeraVe if your skin is normal to dry and a cream texture appeals to you. Its formula focuses on moisture balance and supporting the skin barrier, the outer layer that keeps water in and unwanted substances out.
  • Consider Vanicream if excess oil is your main concern. Keeping oily skin clean does not mean stripping away its moisture; moisturizer still belongs in the routine.
  • If your forehead, nose and chin are oily but your cheeks are dry, judge the routine by both areas. Combination skin still benefits from moisturizer, with a heavier moisturizer on drier areas when needed.

How should you use either cleanser?

These are general gentle cleansing steps; follow your cleanser's bottle directions.

  1. 1Wet your face with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which washes away natural oils.
  2. 2Apply cleanser with your fingertips. Avoid washcloths, mesh sponges and scrubbing.
  3. 3Gently spread the cleanser, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. There is no benefit to a prolonged massage.
  4. 4Pat dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy. CeraVe also directs you to follow its cleanser with a hydrating moisturizer.

Limit face washing to twice daily, once in the morning and once at night, plus after heavy sweating. Wash as soon as possible after sweating, especially beneath a hat or helmet. Extra oil does not require extra scrubbing, even if the bathroom makes that option look impressively productive.4

What should you expect?

The immediate job is removing dirt, makeup and excess oil. For a damaged skin barrier, gentler cleansing is only part of the plan: avoiding harsh soaps and scrubbing, and keeping skin moisturized also matter. Benefits from a broader barrier care routine can take three to four months to appear; that is not a results deadline for either cleanser.13

What if your skin is sensitive?

Sensitive skin can also be dry, oily or combination, so keep the routine simple rather than choosing by skin type alone. If you have rosacea, test a new product before applying it to your face, choose fragrance free products and rinse cleanser off completely. Leftover cleanser can irritate skin. Apply prescribed rosacea medication before moisturizer, and let skin dry before moisturizing to reduce burning or stinging.25

Stinging, irritation, flaky patches or tenderness are reasons to reassess your routine, not scrub harder. If you struggle to find products that do not irritate your skin, ask a dermatologist for help. Barrier problems linked to eczema, rosacea or another skin condition need care tailored to that condition.35
