The comparison below covers US listings; CeraVe formulas differ between versions, so match the product name, SPF and active ingredients to your own bottle. AM combines hydration and sun protection in one step, which gives the bathroom shelf one less job.13
Which CeraVe sunscreen lotion should you choose?
| Product | Sunscreen filters | Useful distinction | US listed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30 | Homosalate 10%, octinoxate 5%, octocrylene 2%, zinc oxide 8% | Face moisturizer with SPF 30; includes niacinamide, ceramides and sodium hyaluronate | $19.99 |
| AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 50 | Homosalate 8%, zinc oxide 7%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 5% | Face moisturizer with a higher SPF; includes niacinamide, ceramides and sodium hyaluronate | $19.99 |
| Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 for Face & Body | Homosalate 6%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 5%, zinc oxide 7% | Explicitly intended for both face and body | $17.99 |
| Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 | Titanium dioxide 2.66%, zinc oxide 15.35% | Uses only mineral sunscreen filters | $16.99 |
| Skin Renewing Brightening Lotion with SPF 30 | Avobenzone 3%, homosalate 5%, octisalate 5%, octocrylene 7% | Uses chemical sunscreen filters; includes niacinamide, squalane and ceramides | $29.99 |
Choose AM if you want a morning face moisturizer with sunscreen built in. Between the two AM options, SPF 50 offers greater sunburn protection at the same listed price. Choose Hydrating Sheer if you want a product labeled for face and body, or consider Invisible Mineral if you want mineral filters only. The Brightening Lotion costs more than either AM version and has a different formula; price alone is not a reason to choose it for sun protection.134
Is CeraVe AM mineral or chemical sunscreen?
Both AM formulas in the table are hybrid sunscreens: they combine zinc oxide, a mineral filter, with chemical sunscreen filters. Zinc oxide on the ingredient list does not make the whole formula mineral only. Another CeraVe AM SPF 30 formula lists homosalate 12%, octinoxate 7.5%, octocrylene 2% and zinc oxide 6.5%. Read the active ingredients on your bottle rather than treating every AM SPF 30 listing as interchangeable. The product name stays familiar while the ingredient list keeps its own calendar.235
What do SPF 30 and SPF 50 actually mean?
SPF means sun protection factor and primarily describes protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVB and UVA rays, which contribute to skin aging. SPF 30 filters out about 97% of UVB rays, and dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher. No sunscreen blocks every UVB ray. A higher SPF does not mean you can wait longer to reapply or stay in the sun longer; SPF measures protection against solar exposure, not hours on a clock.45
How do you apply CeraVe AM lotion?
- 1Prepare the pump if your bottle has one. CeraVe's AM SPF 30 directions say to twist the pump left and press repeatedly until lotion appears; initial dispensing can take 10 to 20 presses.
- 2Apply generously each morning, allowing 15 minutes before sun exposure. Do not wait until you are already outdoors.
- 3Use enough for full coverage. General dermatology guidance calls for at least 1 teaspoon for the face, approximately the amount covering the length of your index and middle fingers. Rub it thoroughly into the skin.
- 4Protect other exposed areas too, including the neck, ears, hands and hairline. Keep sunscreen out of the eyes and mouth. Use SPF 30 or higher lip balm for the lips.
- 5Reapply at least every two hours outdoors, and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after towel drying or when sunscreen has rubbed off.
The face amount above is general sunscreen guidance, not a CeraVe pump count. For exposed body skin, most adults need about 1 ounce, with more needed depending on body size and the area uncovered. A thin application reduces protection. Cloudy weather and winter do not remove the need for sun protection when you go outside.67
What should you expect from the moisturizer?
AM SPF 30 contains ceramides to help maintain the skin's protective barrier, hyaluronic acid to attract and retain moisture, and niacinamide to support the barrier and calm skin. CeraVe describes the AM SPF 30 formula with 6.5% zinc oxide as spreading evenly and drying with a clear finish. Those texture claims belong to that formula. Moisturizing performance and sunscreen wear are separate: all day hydration does not remove the need to reapply sunscreen.2
Which option makes sense for sensitive skin?
Dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both for sensitive skin. Invisible Mineral SPF 50 fits that filter preference; AM remains a hybrid. The AM SPF 30 formula with 6.5% zinc oxide is labeled fragrance free, oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. These are useful selection details, not a reason to ignore irritation or assume the same experience with every AM formula.25
Can you use AM for swimming or exercise?
CeraVe's AM SPF 30 directions tell you to use a water resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating. Look for a stated water resistance duration of 40 or 80 minutes on whichever bottle you choose. Water resistance is tested. No sunscreen is waterproof. Continue to follow the bottle's reapplication directions, including after water exposure and towel drying.24
Use shade, a hat, sunglasses and clothing alongside sunscreen rather than relying on lotion alone. In the UK, the strongest sun is generally between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from March to October; US sun safety guidance emphasizes limiting exposure between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. For UK sunscreen shopping, look for SPF 30 or higher plus at least four star UVA protection or the UVA circle symbol.47
Does CeraVe lotion sunscreen expire?
Check the expiration date and discard sunscreen that has passed it. If there is no expiration date, consider the sunscreen expired three years after purchase; discard it if you cannot establish its age. Keep the container away from excessive heat and direct sunlight, including while outdoors. The bottle needs shade too, an unusually modest demand from bathroom packaging.14
When should you ask a doctor?
Ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to a baby under six months; keep babies out of direct sunlight and use protective clothing. If sunburn leaves you feeling unwell, causes severe swelling or produces blisters, seek medical help and stay out of the sun until the redness has gone.457
