A moisturizer with sunscreen combines two routine steps, which is one less bottle auditioning for space beside the sink. Apply enough for sunscreen protection rather than treating the SPF as a bonus attached to a small dab of moisturizer.14

The US lotion contains zinc oxide alongside three chemical filters. The UK ingredient list names its filters as bis ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, ethylhexyl salicylate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane and ethylhexyl triazone. Match the country and full product name when checking ingredients, and use your package's current list because formulas are updated.23

CeraVe also sells an Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50, so shopping by the largest number on the label is an unnecessarily elaborate guessing game. That separate US product uses titanium dioxide 2.66% and zinc oxide 15.35%, and is listed at $16.99. It is not the AM lotion.2

What does the lotion do?

Ceramides help maintain the skin's protective barrier, which keeps moisture in. Hyaluronic acid helps maintain moisture balance, and niacinamide can help calm skin and reduce moisture loss. The US SPF 50 lotion pairs these ingredients with lightweight hydration, and CeraVe describes it as blending easily into all skin tones.1

CeraVe describes the UK lotion as hydrating for up to 24 hours and leaving no white residue. The UK lotion is described as lightweight and non greasy, so 'lotion' is doing more useful work here than the usual label poetry. Its 24 hour hydration claim describes moisture, not how long the sunscreen lasts.35

What does SPF 50 actually mean?

SPF measures protection against sunburn, primarily from UVB rays. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB. SPF 50 provides greater sunburn protection than lower SPF values, but it does not mean you can stay outside 50 times longer. Sun intensity, location and the amount you apply all matter.5

SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays; higher numbers block slightly more, not all of them. Both SPF 30 and SPF 50 need reapplication. CeraVe's US AM SPF 30 and SPF 50 lotions are both listed at $19.99, but have different filters and concentrations. Pick SPF 50 for the higher labeled sunburn protection, not for longer wear.24

How do you apply and layer it?

  1. 1Start with clean, dry skin in the morning. CeraVe's UK directions specify applying the lotion liberally to the face and neck after cleansing.
  2. 2Apply the sunscreen moisturizer as the final skincare step. Put makeup on after the lotion has absorbed, following CeraVe's general AM lotion layering directions.
  3. 3Use a generous amount. General sunscreen guidance recommends at least 1 teaspoon for the face. Cover exposed ears and neck too, and use sunscreen on other uncovered skin.
  4. 4Apply 15 minutes before going outdoors. This is general sunscreen guidance; follow any additional instructions on your own bottle.
  5. 5Reapply approximately every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. Use a sunscreen labeled water resistant for those activities, and follow its reapplication directions.

Use sunscreen on uncovered skin every day you will be outside, including cloudy days and winter. UVA rays can pass through window glass. Sunscreen does not replace shade or protective clothing: limit direct sun around midday and wear a hat, sunglasses and clothing that covers exposed skin.45

Who should choose it or be careful?

Normal to dry skin is the main target for both AM SPF 50 lotions. CeraVe also describes the UK formula as suitable for all skin types and non comedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both; the US AM lotion is a hybrid rather than a mineral only formula.34

Keep the UK lotion out of your eyes, and rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs. Ask a doctor before using sunscreen on a baby under six months. For older children, follow the Drug Facts label. Shade and protective clothing are the main sun protection measures for young infants.35

How should you store it?

Keep sunscreen away from excessive heat and direct sunlight; outdoors, store the bottle in shade or wrap it in a towel. Discard it after its expiration date. If there is no date, discard it three years after purchase, or sooner if you cannot establish how old it is.5
