What is the lotion like?

CeraVe describes the US lotion as lightweight and non greasy, which is more useful than a product name that needs its own line break. It contains salicylic acid and lactic acid for exfoliation, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and three ceramides to support the skin's protective barrier. The formula has no added fragrance. CeraVe also labels it noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.1

Check the country and the bottle

Canada lists SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin with 3% salicylic acid as its medicinal ingredient. The US listing names salicylic acid without giving a percentage, so do not assume the Canadian strength applies to a US bottle. Both ingredient lists include glycerin, mineral oil, ammonium lactate, dimethicone, three ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. These are product specific details, not reasons to treat every CeraVe SA product as interchangeable.13

Use the ingredient list on your own package when checking suitability, because CeraVe updates ingredient lists regularly. The Canadian SA Cream also lists 3% salicylic acid, but its ingredient list differs from the lotion's and includes niacinamide. A matching acid percentage does not make the cream and lotion the same formula.3

Who is it a good fit for?

The clearest fit is dry body skin with rough texture or a buildup of dead skin cells. It combines exfoliation and hydration in one lotion, so the bathroom shelf does not need a separate department for each. Rough patches commonly appear on the legs, backs of the arms and thighs, but their location alone does not identify the cause. Allergens, harsh washing and excessive heat can also contribute to dry, rough patches.4

For diagnosed keratosis pilaris, salicylic acid and lactic acid are established options for softening and flattening bumps. Keratosis pilaris develops when extra keratin, a protective skin protein, collects in hair follicles. It is harmless and not infectious, and treatment is optional if the appearance, dryness or itch does not bother you. Other conditions can look similar, so unexplained bumps are not automatically keratosis pilaris.25

How do you use CeraVe SA Lotion?

  1. 1Wash gently with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid vigorous scrubbing and long, hot showers.
  2. 2Apply the US lotion only to affected body areas, or as directed by a physician. CeraVe says not to apply it over a large area of the body.
  3. 3Follow your bottle's directions for frequency. The US listing allows use at any time of day.
  4. 4Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure during use and for a week afterwards. The lotion's alpha hydroxy acid can increase sun sensitivity.
  5. 5Stop using the lotion if irritation or burning develops.

General rough skin care favors regular moisturizing on clean, slightly damp skin after bathing. That does not mean applying an exfoliating lotion as often as an ordinary moisturizer. For keratosis pilaris, using too much chemical exfoliant or using it more often than directed can leave skin raw and irritated. Do not add hard scrubbing to make the acids work harder; scrubbing can worsen keratosis pilaris.45

If keratosis pilaris leaves your skin dry, a separate moisturizer can still be useful after exfoliation. Dermatologists favor a thick oil free cream or ointment rather than a lotion for preventing dryness associated with this condition. Apply that moisturizer after bathing and when skin feels dry, at least two or three times daily. That frequency is for the moisturizer, not an instruction to apply SA Lotion repeatedly.5

What results should you expect?

The useful goal is softer skin and less pronounced rough texture. Moisturizing can soften keratosis pilaris, while exfoliating ingredients can flatten its bumps temporarily. Treatment does not clear the condition completely, although it often improves during adult life. Once skin improves, keratosis pilaris generally needs maintenance, often a few times a week. Follow the product directions rather than treating that general maintenance advice as a dose for this lotion.25

Dryness can trigger keratosis pilaris flare ups. Alongside moisturizing, use warm rather than hot water, a mild cleanser, and short baths or showers. Shaving or waxing affected skin can create more bumps. If the bumps persist despite home care, a dermatologist can help assess the condition and discuss other options.5

Can you use CeraVe SA Lotion on the face?

The US SA Lotion product page specifies body use, so do not treat it as a facial moisturizer by default. CeraVe's general FAQ says its range includes products for the face and body, with some specially formulated for each. That broad statement is not a facial direction for this particular lotion. For rough facial skin, choose a product with facial directions or ask a dermatologist about the specific bottle you have.6

When should you be careful?

If you are sensitive to a particular ingredient, discuss the formula with a doctor or dermatologist before using it. Even correctly used exfoliating products can cause dryness or irritation; general keratosis pilaris care advises stopping for a few days if that happens. If rough patches crack, bleed or hurt, seek prompt medical attention. If moisturizing and exfoliating do not improve persistent patches, have their cause assessed rather than increasing exfoliation.456

Moisturizer residue on clothing, bedding or dressings can make fabrics catch fire more easily, even after the product dries. Keep affected fabrics away from naked flames and lit cigarettes. Wash clothing daily and bedding frequently when they are in contact with moisturizers, but washing does not completely remove the risk.2
