What is the difference?
The texture and skin type differences below describe creams and lotions generally, rather than a verified ingredient comparison of the two packs.
| What matters | Cream | Lotion |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Thicker and denser. | Thinner and easier to spread. |
| General composition | Higher oil content. | Higher water content and less oil. |
| Best starting point | Dry skin that needs more moisture. | Skin that is not very dry, or a preference for lighter texture. |
| Weather | A useful choice when winter increases dryness. | A lighter choice for hot weather. |
| Hydration duration | Cetaphil describes Moisturizing Cream as locking in moisture for up to 48 hours. | Check the exact Moisturizing Lotion pack for its hydration claim. |
| Ingredients and price | Check the current ingredient list and price for your pack size. | Check the current ingredient list and price for your pack size. |
A higher price does not mean a moisturizer works better. Choose by dryness and texture, not by which container looks more committed to skincare.4
Which should you choose for your face and body?
- For dry body skin, start with the cream. Creams provide more moisture and preserve more water than lotions.
- For your face, a lotion is generally a better starting point unless your skin is very dry. Check that the product is intended for facial use.
- For normal skin with mild seasonal dryness, lotion can be enough. Move to cream if dryness becomes more pronounced.
- For oily facial skin, neither is automatically the best choice. A gel can be a lighter option.
- For combination skin, moisturize dry areas rather than automatically applying the same amount everywhere.
You can moisturize different areas differently, because one face does not need a single purchasing policy.3
How should you apply them?
Use this general moisturizing sequence alongside the directions on your pack.
- 1After washing, gently pat skin dry, leaving it slightly damp.
- 2Apply moisturizer within three minutes of leaving the shower to help trap water in the skin.
- 3Smooth the moisturizer gently in the direction your hair grows rather than rubbing vigorously.
- 4Use moisturizer daily and after every bath or shower. Reapply when skin feels dry or tight.
Cream is not restricted to bedtime: creams can be suitable for daytime use too. For excessively dry skin, choose a moisturizer you are comfortable applying at least twice a day. A hydration claim lasting up to 48 hours is not a reason to skip daily application.235
What if your skin is sensitive?
Check that your exact product is labeled fragrance free rather than assuming every Cetaphil moisturizer is. Fragrance free does not mean allergen free. For facial use, also look for noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to block pores; do not treat that wording as a promise of no breakouts.2345
If you use a prescribed steroid cream or another treatment for a skin condition, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and moisturizer. Ask your doctor which to apply first to avoid diluting the treatment or spreading it where it is not needed.5
When should you get help?
Do not keep using a moisturizer that causes persistent burning, stinging, inflamed hair follicles or a worsening facial rash; ask a pharmacist or clinician about an alternative. See a dermatologist if regular moisturizing does not help, or dryness becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating.345
