The Cetaphil formula compared here is the Canadian Moisturizing Cream; Vanicream is the cream on its US website, not its lotion or Daily Facial Moisturizer. Cetaphil also sells other creams, so "cream" is a category, not a sufficiently precise shopping instruction.123

Which cream should you pick?

Vanicream is the more straightforward choice if avoiding botanical extracts and essential oils matters to you. Its formula is designed for sensitive skin and has the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. Vanicream also describes the cream as suitable for all ages and for dryness associated with eczema. A shorter ingredient list gives you fewer ingredients to check, not a prediction of how your skin will respond.1

Cetaphil is the choice if you specifically want niacinamide, also called vitamin B3, and panthenol, a form of vitamin B5, alongside glycerin. The Canadian formula also contains sweet almond oil and sunflower oil. If you already know you need to avoid an ingredient, compare the full ingredient lists rather than choosing by the sensitive skin wording on the front.4

Both creams can be used on the face and are described as noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. That is useful when choosing a facial moisturizer, but it does not tell you which cream will suit your face better. Both also work as body moisturizers, so a separate face jar is optional rather than an administrative requirement.14

How do you use them?

  1. 1Start with gentle cleansing. Cetaphil's body routine places cleansing before moisturizing.
  2. 2Apply your chosen cream to the areas needing moisture. Cetaphil is intended for daily use; Vanicream tells you to apply as needed.
  3. 3For Vanicream, apply after bathing, showering, swimming or sun exposure, and before exposure to wind and cold.

What should you expect, and when?

For the Canadian Cetaphil cream, the stated benefits are immediate relief, nourishment within one day and replenishment of the skin's moisture barrier within one week. The moisture barrier is the skin's protective barrier that helps retain moisture. Cetaphil also gives a 48 hour hydration claim after a single application, while still describing the cream as a daily use product.45

Vanicream is intended to restore and maintain moisture and soothe dry, irritated or itchy skin. Its directions use need rather than a fixed morning or evening schedule. Fragrance free does not mean odorless: Vanicream explains that the cream can smell like its ingredients.1

Which is better value?

Compare the current local price for the same amount of cream rather than the price of two differently sized containers. Cetaphil's Canadian cream comes in 85 g, 453 g and 566 g sizes, so the cheapest container and the cheapest cream are not necessarily the same purchase.2
