Is it useful for your skin concern?

COSRX markets the liquid for unclogging pores and smoothing oily skin, so 'Blackhead' is more useful shopping information than 'Power'. In general, BHA exfoliants remove dead skin cells and help dissolve sebum, the oil skin produces, inside pores. That makes clogged pores a more relevant reason to consider a BHA than sensitivity alone.34

The Korean product's ingredient list includes betaine salicylate, willow bark water, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate and panthenol. Do not assume that a salicylic acid product's strength or application schedule applies to this liquid: check the ingredients and directions on the bottle you own.25

Sensitive skin can sting or burn after product use. A mild chemical exfoliator can be preferable to abrasive scrubs or tools, but exfoliation is not suitable for everyone. Exfoliation removes dead surface cells; it is an optional step, despite the skincare industry's fondness for expanding the job description. If your main concern is sensitivity rather than clogged pores, you do not need to add an exfoliant simply to complete a routine.1

How should you test it first?

Use a small area test before applying the liquid more widely. These are general skincare testing precautions, not COSRX specific directions.

  1. 1Choose a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow, where the product will not be rubbed or washed away.
  2. 2Apply the normal amount and leave it on for the duration directed by your bottle. Do not exceed the label's recommended applications during testing.
  3. 3Watch the area over seven to 10 days for redness, itching or swelling. If no reaction develops, proceed with label directed use.
  4. 4If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and do not use it again.

How does it fit into a sensitive skin routine?

Use your bottle's directions for the amount, application order and morning or evening use. There is no universal exfoliation schedule for sensitive skin: frequency depends on the skin and the exfoliation method, and more aggressive exfoliation needs less frequent use. Do not increase applications to speed up results. Facial acids take time and regular use to work; there is no established product specific results timeline here.124

Follow exfoliation with moisturizer because exfoliating can dry the skin. Use sun protection while using a BHA, including SPF 30 or higher facial sunscreen every day. Review existing treatments before adding the liquid: prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can increase sensitivity or peeling, and additional exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts. Discuss adding an exfoliant with your dermatologist if you use a prescription retinoid.14

When should you skip it or stop?

Do not exfoliate sunburned skin or areas with open cuts or wounds. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you develop dark spots after irritation, particularly with darker skin tones. BHA products should not be used on infants or children.12

Stop and contact a doctor for irritation or prolonged stinging. For a skin reaction, a cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve symptoms. See a dermatologist if the reaction is severe and those measures do not help, or if repeated reactions make the trigger difficult to identify. Medical patch testing can help identify an ingredient allergy; it is different from testing a product at home.26
