Which spots does adapalene help?
Adapalene is a retinoid, a medicine related to vitamin A. It increases skin cell turnover to unblock pores and reduce blackheads and spots. It is used for mild to moderate acne. For red or pus filled pimples, benzoyl peroxide can be a useful partner rather than relying on adapalene alone. Combining treatments with different actions is an established approach to acne care.134
How should you apply adapalene?
- 1Remove makeup, wash gently with a mild cleanser, and pat the skin dry.
- 2Spread a thin layer over the whole affected area, not just individual spots. Avoid the eyes, lips and inside the nose.
- 3Wash your hands, then let adapalene absorb before applying moisturizer.
- 4Follow your label or prescription. The usual schedule is once daily at bedtime. Starting two to three nights per week and gradually increasing as tolerated can help sensitive skin.
Choose the supporting skincare for gentleness, not for how impressively complicated the routine sounds. Avoid other retinoids, extra exfoliating acids and abrasive cleansers. If using a separate benzoyl peroxide treatment, use it at a different time of day, such as morning with adapalene at night.3
How long does it take?
Full benefit usually takes 8 to 12 weeks or longer. Acne can look worse during the first few weeks as previously unseen pimples surface. Continue treatment through early worsening unless irritation requires a change. Applying more will not speed results. Adapalene controls acne rather than curing it.23
You can keep moisturizer in the routine, without promoting every other bottle to essential staff. Moisturizer can help with dryness during treatment.2
When should you be careful or get help?
- Dryness, redness, peeling and stinging are common early problems. Reduce frequency or pause for significant irritation. Stop and contact your doctor if irritation is severe or does not improve.
- Do not apply to broken, sunburned or eczema affected skin. Use SPF 50 sunscreen and protective clothing, and avoid sunbeds.
- If you are pregnant or think you could be, stop using adapalene and contact your doctor. Discuss planned pregnancy or breastfeeding before use.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medicines and skincare products before combining treatments.
- Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
- See a dermatologist promptly for deep nodules or cysts because they can cause permanent scars. For persistent blackheads, whiteheads or pus filled spots, seek advice if treatment has not helped after six to eight weeks.
