The answer depends on the exact lotion and market, rather than the CeraVe name alone. CeraVe sells several lotions, so 'the CeraVe one' is doing more paperwork than it can handle.34
What is in Daily Moisturizing Lotion?
The US Daily Moisturizing Lotion contains three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and dimethicone. Ceramides help maintain the skin's protective barrier, while hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture. The lotion is lightweight, oil free and made without added fragrance. Its purpose is hydration, not delivering benzoyl peroxide.15
In Canada, CeraVe also uses the name Moisturizing Lotion for its lightweight, oil free moisturizer for normal to dry skin. That product is described with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Use your bottle's ingredient list to check that Canadian formula rather than treating a US ingredient list as interchangeable.4
How do you use Daily Moisturizing Lotion?
Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a moisturizer for the face and body, which is refreshingly literal work for a product name. CeraVe tells you to apply it liberally as often as needed, or as directed by a physician. You can use it at any time of day. In a routine, it goes after cleansing and any treatment step, and before sunscreen. It is intended for normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin, and has a lightweight, non greasy texture.1
What about CeraVe facial lotions?
The Facial Moisturising Lotion sold in Africa contains niacinamide, three ceramides and sodium hyaluronate, with no benzoyl peroxide listed. It is a lightweight, fragrance free facial moisturizer formulated for normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin.2
Its active ingredients are the sunscreen filters avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene, not benzoyl peroxide. It also contains niacinamide and ceramides. CeraVe tells you to massage a thin layer onto the face and neck in the morning and reapply at least every two hours. Use a water resistant sunscreen for swimming or sweating.3
How can you check your own bottle?
Read the full product name, then look for "benzoyl peroxide" in the ingredient information on your package. CeraVe updates ingredient lists regularly and directs you to the package for the current formula. If your bottle has a different name, SPF or country label, check that bottle rather than extending the answer to every CeraVe lotion.1
