What does face wash actually remove?
Cleansers contain surfactants, cleaning agents that loosen oil and dirt so water can carry them away. One part attaches to oily residue, while another allows that residue to rinse off. Plain water cannot remove every oily residue, so a splash has a smaller job description than a wash. Face wash removes surface buildup, which is useful work without a renovation contract for your face.1
Which face wash should you choose?
For everyday cleansing, choose a gentle cleanser without alcohol, abrasive particles or fragrance. A non soap cleanser is a useful choice for dry or sensitive skin: synthetic detergent cleansers generally cause less dryness and irritation than traditional soap. Sensitive skin can sting during or just after cleansing, so pay attention to how your skin feels after rinsing, not just how clean it looks.1345
How should you wash your face?
- 1Wet your face with lukewarm water.
- 2Apply cleanser with your fingertips and wash gently. Skip scrubbing, washcloths and mesh sponges, which can irritate skin.
- 3Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then pat dry with a soft towel.
- 4Apply moisturizer after cleansing. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
Wash once in the morning and once at night, and after heavy sweating. Remove makeup at night with a mild cleanser. Cleansing comes first in your routine, before products intended to stay on your skin. Extra washes are not a shortcut: frequent washing can irritate skin and worsen acne symptoms.346
Does face wash clear acne?
Acne involves blocked pores, oil, bacteria and inflammation, not dirty skin. A cleanser with benzoyl peroxide kills acne bacteria and helps clear pores. For very dry skin, a 4% or 5% benzoyl peroxide cleanser is a starting option; increase strength only if your skin tolerates it. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores and can treat small pimples or bumps that are not inflamed, but it does not kill bacteria.23
A cleanser alone is not always enough to control breakouts. A treatment that stays on the skin can be more powerful, but also more drying. If you already use an acne treatment, including a prescription, be careful about adding a medicated wash: combining acne cleansers with treatments left on the skin can cause excessive dryness and irritation.12
When should you change the wash or get help?
Stop using a product if it causes skin irritation or an itchy rash, and arrange a dermatologist appointment. Test a new cleanser on a small area of your face for a week before using it all over, watching for itching, burning or breakouts. Introduce one new product at a time so you can identify a problem.26
A pharmacist can advise on a few blackheads, whiteheads or spots. See a doctor if acne is widespread, painful, includes cysts, or has not responded to pharmacy treatments. Prescription treatment can be needed rather than another face wash.3
