Why does sunlight make dark spots worse?
Sun exposure stimulates production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to hyperpigmentation, meaning darker patches of skin. UVA also passes through clouds and window glass, so direct outdoor sunshine is not the only exposure that matters. Darker skin has some natural protection from melanin, but still needs sunscreen.13
Can sunscreen fade hyperpigmentation?
Sunscreen's main role is to limit further darkening while pigmentation settles or receives treatment. Marks left after inflammation are often temporary, but tend to be more intense and last longer in darker skin. Do not expect a fixed fading deadline. Separate treatments such as azelaic acid, vitamin C or prescribed creams can target existing pigment, and combinations are often needed for significant improvement. Treating pigmentation while leaving it exposed to the sun gives your skincare budget two opposing jobs.12
Does sunscreen stop acne marks from getting darker?
Sunscreen helps limit sunlight related darkening of the flat pigmented marks left where an inflamed spot has healed. These marks are called postinflammatory hyperpigmentation: extra pigment after inflammation or injury. They are different from blackheads, which are plugs in open pores, and from permanent scars that deep acne can leave. Sunscreen protects against further sun related darkening; blackheads and active acne need acne treatment.24
What sunscreen is best for dark spots?
Choose broad spectrum SPF 50+ for exposed areas with postinflammatory pigmentation. Broad spectrum protection covers UVA as well as UVB. The SPF number describes mainly UVB protection, so the largest number on the bottle is not the whole job description. No sunscreen blocks all ultraviolet radiation.23
For darker skin with dark spots or melasma, consider a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides for protection against visible light as well. Tinted mineral options are less likely to leave a white cast than untinted ones. For sensitive skin, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide mineral sunscreens are options to consider.15
How should you use sunscreen for dark spots?
- 1Apply sunscreen daily before going outside, covering all skin not covered by clothing.
- 2Apply a generous, even layer. Applying too little reduces the protection expected from the labelled SPF.
- 3Reapply every two hours during outdoor exposure, rather than relying on the morning application all day.
- 4Add shade and protective clothing, including a wide brimmed hat, to reduce sun exposure.
What if you are also treating the marks?
Retinol can improve uneven pigmentation, but retinoids can also cause irritation that triggers dark marks, especially in darker skin. Start with a gentle formula every other night and use moisturiser. Use retinoids at night and sun protection during the day. Avoid retinoids during pregnancy. If treatment causes substantial redness or inflammation, avoid the retinoid and ask a dermatologist about alternatives.5
Have a dermatologist assess pigmentation you are unsure about, especially a new growth that looks different from other spots. Do not assume every dark mark is an acne mark.1
