How long does deodorant last?

There is no single shelf life that applies to every deodorant. How long a cosmetic stays usable depends on its formula, how you use it and where you store it. Shelf life covers more than whether the product still smells pleasant: it includes whether the product behaves as expected and remains safe to use. For a product without clear shelf life information, ask the manufacturer rather than borrowing a lifespan from another brand.1

What if there is no expiry date?

In the United States, cosmetics are not legally required to carry an expiry date, although manufacturers are responsible for their safety. A missing date is a labelling rule, not a promise of immortality. In Great Britain, cosmetic packaging can carry a best before date or a period after opening, which tells you how many months or years the product remains safe after opening. Those are different clocks: one is a calendar date, while the other starts when you open the product.12

How to check an old deodorant

  1. 1Read the container and any outer packaging for an expiry date, opening period, storage instructions and precautions. Follow the instructions for that product.
  2. 2Check for a different smell, colour or feel. Do not use the deodorant if any of these have changed.
  3. 3Look for physical deterioration, such as drying, hardening, cracking or separation. These are ways cosmetics can break down, not reasons to keep applying them.

Preservatives help control bacteria in cosmetics, but preservatives can also break down over time. Some ingredients used in deodorants help maintain product quality and extend shelf life. Their presence does not replace the product's storage and use instructions.14

How should you store deodorant?

Keep deodorant in a dry place away from direct heat and sunlight, and keep its container and applicator clean. A hot car is a poor storage spot: heat can speed up microbial growth and break down preservatives. Bathroom moisture can also encourage bacteria and fungi. Temperature changes, sunlight and air can alter a cosmetic's colour, texture and smell. For spray deodorants, follow the container's hazard information and never spray near a flame or heat source.13

Does more sweat mean your deodorant has expired?

Sweating alone is not a useful expiry test because deodorant controls odor, while antiperspirant reduces sweating. Deodorant and antiperspirant have different jobs, even when they share a bathroom shelf. A product can combine both functions. Underarm deodorants can cover odor or target the bacteria involved in producing it; those functions are different from reducing sweat.56

If your product carries a drug expiration date, replace it when that date passes. Drug dates describe the period during which strength, quality and purity remain stable under the labelled storage conditions. A degraded drug can lose strength and fail to deliver its intended benefit.7

What if deodorant irritates your underarms?

Stop using the product if you think it has caused a reaction, regardless of its date. Cosmetics can cause irritation or allergic reactions even without being old. See a doctor if the irritation persists. If the problem is unusual or strong body odor rather than a product reaction, a dermatologist can assess possible causes.36
