How long does witch hazel last?
There is no single shelf life to apply to every witch hazel formula. Cosmetic shelf life depends on the product, how you use it and how you store it. The name 'witch hazel' is not a shelf life, however much work the bottle asks those two words to do. For a specific duration, use the manufacturer's instructions for your product.1
How to check your bottle
- 1Look for a printed expiration date. For a product labelled as a medicine, the date reflects how long the product retains its strength, quality and purity when stored as directed.
- 2Look for an open jar symbol with a number followed by M. The number gives the months the cosmetic should last after opening; count from when you first opened it, not from your next use.
- 3Record the opening date on the bottle so you can track that limit.
- 4If neither date nor opening instructions appear, contact the manufacturer for the product's shelf life. An absent date is not a reason to treat the bottle as indefinitely usable.
In the United States, cosmetics do not have to carry expiration dates or an opening symbol. Manufacturers remain responsible for cosmetic safety and determining shelf life. A blank space where you hoped to find a date is a labelling gap, not a promise of immortality.13
Why does witch hazel expire?
Witch hazel skincare products are subject to the same general deterioration processes as other cosmetics. Water containing cosmetics need protection against microbial contamination, meaning contamination by organisms such as bacteria and fungi. Preservation systems help prevent growth and keep the formula usable. Product deterioration can also result from exposure to oxygen; preventing microbial growth and preventing oxidation are different jobs.4
Preservatives can break down over time, allowing bacteria and fungi to grow. Fingers introduce microorganisms, while moisture can make growth easier. Sunlight, air and temperature changes can also alter a cosmetic's colour, texture and smell. These are general cosmetic storage principles, not a fixed expiry timetable for witch hazel.1
When should you throw it away?
For a cosmetic witch hazel product, use general cosmetic spoilage checks: discard it if the smell becomes bad, the colour changes, the consistency changes or the product feels different on your skin. Do not wait to finish the bottle when those changes appear. Use these checks alongside the product's dates, rather than replacing the dates with a sniff test.3
How should you store witch hazel?
Follow any storage conditions on the label. For a cosmetic toner, keep the bottle in a clean, dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap securely after every use and keep the container and applicators clean. These habits help a cosmetic reach its intended lifespan; they do not give it a new expiration date.123
